Changing a 10 yo horse's name?

My new horse's name is Miss Wendy Glow. She's been called Wendy but I know so many people named Wendy, I'd like to call her something else. Any suggestions?

Does she respond to her name?? If not, you can call her whatever you want. If she does, go with Breburtch's suggestion to go with a name that sounds similar. She gave some good suggestions

My friend rescues pit bulls and places them in good homes. She says an animal can learn a new name in about two weeks. She ALWAYS changes the names of the dogs and says they have NO PROBLEM learning the new name in a very short time.

I just about always change my new horses' names. The names are super important to me and I want something that REALLY appeals to me. I have changed the name to just about every horse I've ever gotten. They learn the new name really fast.

So don't hesitate to name her anything you like. She will learn it with no trouble. And there is NO BAD LUCK in changing a name. I can prove that with some of my wonderful horses.

She's a black and white paint. Sorry, I only have the sale pic and it's not very good. She went right off to my trainer for a month for a refresher. Here she is:

That's not true.. my friend's Arabian gelding Apollo knows his name very well, he responds to it and nothing else.

If she does know her name, then change it to something similar. If not, then anything goes. She is gorgeous!

I changed my 13 yr.old geldings name from Rascal to Rascalla. (After a horse in my favorite Disney movie "The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit". He does just fine. Some say there is an old "barn tale" that it's bad luck to change your horses name. But I don't believe in any of that. It's your horse do what you want.

I bought a 17 year old mare, and her name was Margie, and i changed it because i was a 9 year old kid and margie sounded like my grandma.

She relearned her name in a few days.

Changed it to Josie.

She is very beautiful...!!!! I would name her Windy or Breezy....or I always like to name cats and horses after birds or flowers...something from nature...Chickadee, Meadow Lark, Hawk (one of my geldings is named Hawk), or Clover.

I have only changed the name of a horse once. Only because her name was Lady and we had had another wonderful horse with the same name...so I changed the new horses name to Strawberry because she is strawberry roan.

I wanted to name my French Bulldog Sui, because she looks like a pig but we have a friend named Sue and I thought she might be offended.

Good luck to you naming your horse!

My horse knows his name. His name is Teddy, so if I say that or ted-o or one of his other nicknames he will respond to it.

My horses know their names and I changed both.

Mya's name use to be willow. She now answers to Mya as well as her nickname Monkey.

Max's name use to be Jack. He now knows Max as well as his nickname Handsome. I'm sure any animal can learn any word as long as you use it enough.

I have a dog that I rescued. Apparantly for 17yrs he was known as Timmy when I got him I changed his name to Petey. He now answers to Petey as well as Little Man and Little Buddy.

I changed my mare's name to Pepper. She's about 15 or something close. She's probably had three or four names in her life. She knows her new name...honestly she doesn't care what I call her as long as it's me and I have treats

You can teach any animal to recognize certain sounds to react to, names are just a human invention that they learn to associate with the positive attention that comes with you. Petting, food, treats, rubs, games...they like it, and that sound you make goes along with it, so they learn to look at you or move towards you when they hear it. I've had pet rats learn their names. Cats and dogs pick it up easily. Cows, pigs, goats, horses...any one of 'em.

Her registered name is only one place you can start for finding ideas. What do you want to call her? She is gorgeous by the way Hope her refresher is going well and we get updates on her soon!
