Morgans and Arabians-pulled manes

The barn I board at is having a large 3 day show for Arabians and Morgans. I was watching today and saw many horses with pulled manes. Is this a new trend for Morgans and Arabians or have I just never noticed this. I'm just curious. I was shocked when I noticed how many were pulled and or braided.

I can understand the braiding so they look neat. I can't get ahold of why people pull out the hair from a horses mane.

I see my horse all the time use her mane to flip off a fly, I'd feel so bad for her if she didn't have any mane. When she stands in the rain with her head down the mane helps the water roll off. She stays dry under there.

lol, maybe I'm not understanding what "pulling"is

I don't know about Morgans, but we don't pull the Arabs when we showed them. We had nine at one time we showed and their manes where left natural. I won't let my daughter pull and band my Appys mane. I love it long and natural. She has a gorgeous mane and it isn't gonna be pulled. LOL

If you show your arabian in both Halter and performance, you need to leave the mane long. But an arabian can have a pulled mane in performance classes. The AHR has a little blip in their rules that in order to compete at Hunter/dressage how it realizes that conformity is required. I think you can even roach a mane on a working western horse.

Halter horses must have a natural flowing mane.

Clear as mud??

Both breeds are supposed to have their manes/tails long, thick, flowing. Natural look.
Wonder why they are doing that?

I'd never chop my horses mane off, I like it natural looking.

Arabs can have a loooooong bridle path shaved/clipped, but the rest of the mane is supposed to be left long, natural, flowing.

I would NEVER pull Tule's mane. It's gorgeous. Can you see it in my avatar?

However, Pepper's needed to be pulled...she is growing out from poor ownership maintenence issues. But she is also a QH or enough of one that it looks normal on her to have a neatly pulled mane.

Overall I do believe it's rider/owner preference unless you're conforming to a show standard.

Morgans are suppose to have natural manes, but most of the people who show them hunt or jump pull the manes to make it easier to put in the little braids.

I was only watching. I have a welsh pony. I did see several with the running braid so the mane was still long, but many both arabs and morgans had pulled manes. I was shocked.

Morgan rule book states that Morgans are to be shown with full mane and tail. They have relaxed that rule alittle for the Hunter and Dressage and allow braiding however most of the Hunters at our shows are French braided so their manes can stay long. I have seen some with button braids but Hunter is the only Division they show thoses horses in. The horses could be penalized if their manes were pulled and they were shown with out the braiding. We French braid our Morgan Hunters.
