What state has the most horses

I tried finding this information online, but couldn't successfully locate any websites that gave me a complete listing. I'm interested to see what state has the most horses and what state has the most horses per capita. Does anyone know?

I was at the county fair 2 or 3 years ago and was told by a barn/stall display guy that it was Indiana. But I'm not sure if he was talking about the mid west or the whole country.

Sorry... most horses per state.

My guess would be Florida. Though I am not really sure.

My guess would be Texas considering the sheer size of the state.

I'm not sure of the number of horses in Texas, but according to the state, in 2006, horses were a $6 billion (that's Billion with a B) dollar business here.

I'm sure they mean more than just the equines themselves, it must include services and accessories, not to mention feed and supplies.

Apparently New Jersey boasts "most horses per square mile".

I was going to say Kentucky because of horse racing.

Well the map kinda gives you an idea anyway.

I went in a different direction...
the state with the most horses for sale would logically have the most horses. Assuming that HT is popular everywhere, the states that had the most for sale were...

California
Florida
Illinois
Kentucky
Michigan
New York
North Carolina
Ohio
PA
Texas
Virginia

Now, HT limits you to 500 results and all of these states had over that amount for sale. I couldn't figure out how to search for text ads only so how many over 500 I don't know.

BTW, British Columbia and Ontario both had over 500 also.

My answer would be:

WY[mostly mountainous horses]
FLA[mostly ottbs or tb racers]
CA[mostly ottbs or tb racers]
OK[mainly a qh/paint-land w/ a few "others"]
TX[mainly a qh/paint-land]
KY[mostly ottbs/tb racers/and notably the saddlebred horses]

I heard also Montana was "once" up in the top lists of horses p/state...but I cannot say for sure.

Anyways, those are my selections

A few years ago my husband told me that the state with the most horses per capita is CT. Not sure how accurate that info is.

I just finished watching a program on the History Channel about every state in the USA. It stated that New Jersey has the most horses per square foot.
