Want to help an unwanted horse? Do you have an unwanted horse?

I got this in an email, it's the first that I've gotten that is introducing an organised group actually doing something about the unwanted horses. A group like this may actually help make a difference in the lives of many horses, I thought!

Unwanted Horse Group Compiling List of Facilities Accepting Horses
by: Edited Press Release
October 18 2007, Article # 10633
ARTICLE TOOLSPrint Email

The Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) is asking facilities that will
accept and/or place horses to list themselves on the UHC Web site.

"This is an important step for the coalition," said Tom Lenz, DVM,
UHC chairman. "We have received many inquiries, not only from horse
owners who are seeking retirement homes or second careers for their
horses, but also from people who are interested in adopting a horse
or volunteering at equine placement organizations. We expect that
this online directory will furnish valuable information to all these
people and, in so doing, be good for the horses."

Representatives for the UHC said they hope the group's Web site will
be utilized as a bridge between people who are seeking alternatives
for their horses and the many facilities that will accept them. Such
facilities include rescue, retirement, and retraining facilities;
therapeutic riding programs; colleges and universities; police and
military organizations; public stables; and government and park
service programs.

The UHC has organized its Web site so that representatives of these
facilities can list themselves after completing a brief
questionnaire.

To complete the questionnaire or view the facilities in the
directory, go to www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org, click "Resources,"
and follow the link to "Facilities that Accept Horses."

Facilities will be listed by state. The information from the
questionnaire is intended to give horse owners more information
about the facility, including contact information, whether it is tax
exempt, year founded, horse capacity, number of staff, and whether
it follows the "Care Guidelines for Rescue and Retirement
Facilities," published by the American Association of Equine
Practitioners. Facility managers will also be able to describe their
organization and spell out its purpose and philosophy.

"We want as many facilities listed as possible, large and small, all
breeds and purposes, those with a formal structure and those
without," Lenz said. "Just because a facility is small or not tax-
exempt doesn't mean it is not a good facility. There are plenty of
horses who need care, training, and use. We want to make horse
owners aware of the big facilities that may have farms in several
states and the smaller facilities that may serve a local area. They
all have a place in this effort."

The UHC Web site also features a series of questions to help guide
owners trying to decide on a facility, program, or second use for
their horse.

"Sometimes people just don't understand what facilities do and what
questions they should ask," said Katy Carter, UHC coordinator. "We
hope this will help them and their horse in a difficult time."

The UHC is a broad alliance of equine organizations that have joined
together under the American Horse Council to reduce the number of
unwanted horses and help horse owners understand the various
options, services, and assistance available to them when they are
considering what to do with a horse they can no longer care for.

The coalition's Web site has information on the issue of the
unwanted horse along with an ever-expanding resource section
dedicated to educational materials and news articles. A brochure
highlighting the coalition and its activities is available online,
along with a handbook entitled "Own Responsibly: Guidance for
Current and Potential Horse Owners from the Unwanted Horse
Coalition."

For more information see the UHC Web site,
www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org.

We need to spread the word on this...I'm glad someone is stepping up!

Imagine, TMom, someone else is calling the horses unwanted.

They're looking for facilities in each state. Wonder what qualifies as a facility, if it has to be a rescue? If so, one small part each of us could do, is email those links to the rescues in our area. The more listed on that site(s), the better chance of helping out the unwanteds!

My only hope is that they have enough staff to police the facilities signing up and offering their "services" to take in unwanteds. I can just see people using this veil to populate their fields with free horses. But all in all, I think it's a great idea!

I love the idea - I wish we had the hay to take in a few - especially babies -as we could train and then rehome them easily - we have done it before, and it sure helps them to find nice new owners.. I may have to sign up to be able to take on one or two - they don't eat that much, right ..

If I knew more about horses and how to deal with and train them, I'd certainly sign up to help out. Then again, life is in an upheaval for us lately, and it wouldn't be fair.

Still. If I knew more, I'd start a rescue. Right now I have my two rescues and my hands are full, while the wallet is empty....

Maybe that should be a goal for me. I've been trying to figure out a way to get this huge property in NJ that I just LOVE...I was thinking of starting a farming business in order to get the funding. Maybe a non profit rescue would work for that as well. I have friends in NJ who do know more than I do, who are trainers...Maybe I should look into it a little more seriously.

This was GREAT!! Thanx for the info.
Bless you wildcat. I am in an unsteady financial boat myself right now, and will stay that way till I get registered as a nurse. But I have learned alot about rehab and training, so if I can help you ask anytime.
My biggest issue right now is not having a trailer to help or transport, and how I have barbed wire (I hate it too, but I don't have the money to replace it just yet) on the backside of my property, along the woods. That bumps me out of being able to take alot of them.

Shame how us with the biggest hearts to help don't have the means....(sigh)

I am proud to be on a forum with such wonderful advocates for horses...

Blessings, all!

I like to think of Nicole and I as our own group of 2, we just saved Dream from horrible conditions and the slaughter truck. I wish I could do more!

GREAT! The more people aware, the better. But, as DivineME said, I hope anybody donating will check them out for themselves as thoroughly as possible. There are always the bad apples and the rescue I work with has had slaughter buyers posing as "good home forever" adopters.

Pretty dang low of them, but those types are low to begin with.

This is a great idea. I will put myself on that list. I allready do my fairshare of taking in horses that are not wanted and rehoming them, but I could do a little more. It is very rewarding to be able to give someone the horse they have always wanted, and to help a horse have a good life!

wow, you have done so much allready , however it is allways nicfe to do more,

with the drought in oz righ tnow there are horses (apparently) dying in paddocks in nsw simply NO water to go to them, disghusting.
i have only taken on one rescue.. but you should see her now ...fatty fatty boombar...
i would like to take on more however but i aim to give the best care that i can afford (and horse food is not cheap when there is none growing (or has not grown for about 7 years now..)) so one will do it.
now i am stuck with her forever. (one of those that have irreversable problems in the "not try8ing to kill you when being ridden department) but she is a sweetie and did not deserve to die hungry that is for sure.

she is not hungry now and never will be again, and whilst i would like to help more, this makes me feel good, the rest of her life will be luxury and leasure and full of warm rugs/ stables and food food and more food...

good to see others care.. as this is quite rare in my area withi the horse community. lots of nasty ness...for sure. but you guys are great!!

I myself used to run a rescue facilty- we used to go to sales- where dog meat buyers were- and we would buy unwanted horses bring them home- love/feed/retrain and search to find them new homes suitable to their persoalities- unfortunately as you can imagine we ran out of money!
