Pulling a 2 horse stock trailer with a Class A MH

Has anyone ever pulled a trailer behind a class A motorhome? Husband thinks it would be no problem, I have reservations, mostly due to overall length. Opinions?

I've never personally done it, but I see lots of people that do it at a camp ground by me. They never seem to have any problems.

Depends on the MH. Most gas powered MH's have a 5000# tow limit. I would think that a 2 horse w/1 horse inside would be close or over that. With 2 horses definately.

A diesel class A MH can normally tow 10,000#.

In either case, you'll need to check your state's laws for limits on overall length. Although this is rarely enforced. I know of a couple that has been towing their 21' enclosed trailer behind their 42' MH all over the USA & Canada for 3 yrs.

Have a look at the motorhome and measure how far it is from the rear axel to the hitch.

My son used to race cars so we have pulled our race trailer some 40,000 miles behind our motorhome, ours is a gas powered class A, and the race trailer when loaded for an event weighs somewhere around 8000lbs so the weight similar to a very loaded 2 horse trailer.

That mentioned to explain the concern - on our MH it is 15' from the axel pivot to the hitch. When the front tires hit a dip the hitch rises and falls very fast - to the point of knocking open cupboards and throwing things out of them. Juju and I have discussed pulling the horses behind the MH but, and rightfully so, she is concerned about damaging horses legs by being tossed up in the air when the front of the trailer is suddenly whipped 3' up then forcefully pulled back down. Now I'm speaking from the perspective of driving on lousy California roads, the highway department in your area might not think a hole that you could loose a pony in is acceptable

Make sure you check into seeing if you need to reinforce the bumper.

Some states have length restrictions. How long is your class A? Look in your book and see what it is rated for towing. When working at a dealership, you would see them pulling all sorts of things. If it is rated for the weight you are going to pull it will have no problem. Make sure your hitch is the right one for towing in the only other thing I would look at.

My mh is gas powered and 37 ft. I'm not sure what the tow rating is, I can check that. We've towed flat bed trailers and cars before with no problem but never any live cargo, lol. PMservice brought up a good point about measuring distance between axel and hitch. Ours is probably close to 15' too so we may have the same problem with the trailer popping up. I never would have thought of that. Thanks for the input everyone!
