Moving to Alabama & Need a Vet/Farrier

Is there anyone in Elkmont, Alabama or close by that can recommend a vet/farrier in the area. My husband has decided that we are moving to Alabama where I have never been nor do we know anyone there by mid-summer and I'd like to be prepared prior to getting there.

Down here finding a vet/farrier was easy since we know several people who have horses that could give us recommendations. But I'm now totally lost. Any ideas on the best way to find a good vet and farrier.

Sorry that I am not any help. We live in the eastern/central part of the state. However, I do know there is a breeding operation in or around Elkmont. They have a paint horse named Nite Time Fantasy. They used to run an ad in the Western Horseman, so I pulled an old issue,. Her eis their info. :

Crooked Branch Paint Horse Farm
T.C. & Joyce Kimbrell
256-232-8484 or 256-232-6706
www.crookedbranchpainthorsefarm.com

I don't know anything about them except I always noticed their ads in the magazine.

Welcome to Alabama. It is a really great place to be. If I can help in any other way, just let me know.

How close are you to Birmingham? I dont know where the city is that you are moving to, but there is a great vet in Pell City Coosa Valley Equine. Do not know the number off hand. Also there are some great farriers in the area that travel around, I'll ask around and see if they are accepting new clients, and get the # for CVE.

First and foremost, WELCOME TO ALABAMA! (I know my profile says Georgia, but that's only temporary!)

I don't have a farrier right now, but I do know that your best bet is to find a larger farm in the area to share visits with, or to get together with your horsey neighbors and schedule visits with them. Depending on the number of horses you have a farrier may or may not be very easy to find unless you bundle with others. I have two horses in the Huntsville area and it is a constant battle to find a farrier that can come more than once, or more often than every three months. But it is doable. I have begun to trim my horses myself, but I still have a farrier come every few months and monitor our progress and hoof health. He lives in the Tuscaloosa area, but travels to North Alabama fairly often. PM me if you want his number, and Good Luck!

palakida - thanks for the info and a solid lead on a great looking stud...I wasn't going to breed my mare, but him with her would make really pretty babies.

bamabrat - Not close to Birmingham at all. Elkmont is about 1 1/2 hours due north off I-31. Any heads up on a farrier up that way would be great.

I tell ya'll I'm not looking forward to this trip. My colt has only traveled in a trailer one time and that was with his momma from Yeehaw Junction to our house in Palm Beach and back. That was only a 2 1/2 hour roundtrip over a weekend. Now he's got to go by himself from Yeehaw Junction up to Elkmont which is a minimum of a 10 hour drive without pulling a horse trailer. Definetly a worry for me.

sorry I couldn't hook you up with anything more specific, but maybe they can help.

As for you trip... it is going to suck. I am sure your boy will be fine. Let us know how it goes.

wish I could be more help, but I can say that Coosa Valley Vet is awesome. When I was in GA, I would drive 4 hours to CVV for Dr. Murray if it was a non-emergency & couldn't be handled on the farm (one needed tendon repair surgery, one needed serious hoof work/surgery, a few for lameness evals, joint injections-could've been done on farm, but I didn't trust the farm vet to do it, etc) Anyway, something to keep in mind if you need something done, they are worth the drive. They also have very good farriers there, maybe call them and ask for a recommended farrier closer to you?
