Steel toed shoes if you are new to horses...[/quote]

NO Steel Toed Shoes are BAD NEWS!!!! I've seen cases where people have had those on thinking they are better off with them on than not and what can happen is if your horse (or any other large animal) steps on you toes it can cause the steel to bend down traping your toes and possibly cutting them off. If you wear shoes that aren't steel toe all that happends is a smoshed foot and maybe a few broken toes, I'd rather have broken toes than none at all. I have been lucky enough to only have the steel bend down and I was able to remove my foot but I lost a $130 pair of shoes that day. Ever since that I tell people to only wear shoes that are not steel toe.

Just something to keep in mind

And I make a strong challenge to these statements. I had a foot broken when I was 18 from a horse stepping on it. 20 years later I still regret it, my foot has never been "right" since.

I wear steel toes all the time, work with drafts and light horses, and have been stepped on by both, on a couple of occasions REALLY HARD, and my steel toe has been perfectly fine. Mine are rated to 2500lbs.

Vet wrap
Tea Tree oil (fungicide)
Rubber boots for those mucky days
Fencing tool
Disposable razors for wisker trims for show days if horse is freaky about clippers.
Oh yeah, did any one mention DUCT TAPE??????

The one thing you forgot besides the duct tape was the BALING TWINE. If it doesn't need one, then it needs the other LOL.

Also, if you have any type of wire fences a GOOD pair of fence cutters for emergencies.

It's also nice to have work gloves for chores and riding gloves...for riding.
A good Sharpie if you board to write your name on EVERYTHING! I also like my sweat scraper, hoof pick and man oh man do I love my bugspray. I know its already been mentioned, but I LOVE bugspray and sunscreen.

It's also nice to have a barn jacket, pair of sunglasses and a hat so you don't mind them getting horse boogers on them. I try and keep an entire set of barn clothes in my car along with boots, bugspray, sunscreen, an equine medical encyclopedia, sunglasses and hat. This sort of only applies if you board I guess, but it has worked for me.

I'm gonna try that zinc stuff for my horse's bald face. Good idea!

Tool Box:

Hammer
Both types of screwdriver
Nails
Screws
Zip Ties
Twist Ties
Rubber Bands
Ever famous Duct Tape
String (or baling twine... same thing)
Needle nose and regular pliers
Heavy duty kitchen shears

Tack Care:

Gallon size ziplock bags - Smother a dried out set of leather reins in oil, bag them over night. Like new the next day, just wipe with a rag. Will turn light oil finish to dark though, so be careful.

Leather Oil
Saddle Soap
Leather foaming type cleaner
Terry cloth rags
Kitchen Sponges
Spoon (sounds silly... but it knocks off clumps of mud, and you can scrape dirt off gently without scratching the leather surface)

Small spray bottle of mild soap w/ water... use this on dusty items, since some leather cleaners will cause the dirt to stay on the surface instead of removing the dirt, leaving it to dry that way after cleaning... leaving a film of dirt. "Washing" first, then leather care, then oil, prevents this on items you've not used in a long time that collected dust.

Human First Aid kit:

Band aids
Neosporene
Gauze
Medical Tape
Ace Bandage
Antibacterial soap (so you can wash your hands at a sink or hose)
Hand Sanitizer (for before and after you treat a horse for something)

Boarding Barn NEEDS:

Write your name on everything you want to keep. For expensive saddles, bridles, or items you can't write on, have a metal name tape installed by a leather smith. Most saddle shops can do this.

Wheel barrow, Fork, extra buckets, for self-serve style barns.

Have a stall sign, that includes your name and contact information, your horses name and description (or photo), your vet, 1 or 2 back up vets, and your farrier's name and number. Make sure it's printed, and then put into a plastic holder to keep it from getting damaged. A dry erase board can be erased or smudged. For barn messages, you can have a dry erase board as well.

I kept odd things in my tack room too. Like a dog tie out, for if I brought my dog, if a stray showed up, or for other boarders to use. Worked on goats too.

Rope, strong enough to make a lunge line out of. Used it as a blanket drier, and just odd jobs that needed rope.

Needle less syringes... squirting out wounds, feeding kittens, if you have them there's uses for them.

I had brought a cat carrier too, to store at the barn. There had been a kitten dump of unweaned babies, a trapped raccoon, baby birds knocked from nests or caught by barn cats... it saw a lot of use at one of the barns I stayed at.

I was that person who always got asked "Hey... do you have a ..."

Why yes, I have that.

Haven't you heard the old saying..."All you need in this world is duct tape and WD-40....if it moves and it is not supposed to-then use the duct tape. if it DOESN'T move and it is supposed to,then use theWD-40"

Actually for horse care..you can keep a shoe on till farrier gets there with duct taping it to the hoof. Abcess? Soak it in warm epsom salts then pack with Icthammol ointment-cover with a small diaper and cover with duct tape.
Tape a gate shut when someone busts it open.
In emergency first aid kit-have a maxi pad and the end of a roll of duct tape for emergency bandage. End of roll because you can "smoosh down" the roll so it lays flat and lays flat in pack.

I find a LEATHER PUNCH to be very handy for punching extra holes in stirrup leathers, bridles etc.

If that doesn't work just use DUCT TAPE!

Oh, you know... in case mice get into something you can tape over the hole they made while you shop for something more sturdy.

To keep the sign on your horses stall in place after everything else has it laying on the floor again after a couple of days. (duct tape fights against barn dust, where masking tape and scotch tape fail!) Or use it to reinforce the corners of the sign, so that you can pound a nail through it without the paper ripping on the first breeze that goes by.

Wrap it around the end of a fraying lead rope. Buys time while you try to find time to go to the tack store for a new one.

A small piece will tie off split reins. But baling twine looks better for that.

I had cracked a western stirrup on the day of a trail ride. I was bound and determined to go even though there weren't any extra stirrups. Duct tape!

Well let's see I wouldn be at a loss with a a couple of hackamores and hoof nippers and a rasp. Let's see. . .

A HELMET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes, duct tape-it actually saved my horses life (no kidding) he got a cut on the top of his front leg (still can't figure out how) and he had a HUGE blood loss in a matter of minutes. We couldn't get the bleeding to stop until we wrapped paper towel around it and placed duct tape around the paper towel to hold in place and apply steady pressure. We tried cold packs. a tourniquet everything. He would have died without it!

Also baby disposible diapers. They work great if you need to cover a cut on the leg while the vet comes.
