Kayode was Attacked!

Oh I'm angry. If I would have seen this happen, I'd have a dead animal's head on a stick as an example to others.

I was out with my dogs, getting ready to leave for Nashville last night for a nice dinner with my father and husband. Kayode came up to the fence when he saw me and somehting just didn't seem "right". He wasn't really acting weird, just giving me a strange vibe. So I looked him over to make sure everything was OK. I discovered a big fluid filled lump on his chest. As I was inspecting it, thinking maybe it was just a fatty cyst or something, I noticed there was dried puss. That's when I found the puncture wound. It's ugly and probably infected, but not bad enough to warrant a vet call...just yet.

I continued to look him over, knowing there had to be more. I found several more bite wounds on his right front leg. None too deep, very little swelling.

Overall, the attack didn't leave behind much injury, but the whole thing is enough to infuriate me. One of two things happened (and I don't know WHEN this happened, the wounds look about a day or so old.), either my neighbor's f-ing dogs were up here and, for the first time ever, actually attacked my horse, or we had a lone coyote. I'm inclined to think it was the neighbor's dogs because my husband said he saw one of them limping pretty badly two days ago. We've had problems with them before, but just running the horses. I'm thinking Kayode had enough and was protecting his herd. No one else has any marks.

I guess a pack thinning will be in order.

I hope Kayode will be ok Wildcat! Stupid dogs, I would look out for that dog hubby said was limping...it would be my best guess that he is your culprit. Are you going to confront the neighbors? Glad he didnt get hurt any worse.

Oh no!! Well at least it was not to sever! Have you spoken with the neighbor about their dog? If so and they have done nothing about it I would contact you local animal control or sheriff asap!! Even if you have no solid proof it was their dog the fact that there is a past of them chasing your horses is enough to warrant you to confront them or call the authorities!

Poor baby!!!! That's awful!

I wouldnt think it's coyote behavior unless you have a coyote dog cross around. Hopefully if one the dogs was limping they learned thier lesson and won't be back.

I think you have the right idea with the heads on the poles....

Animal control is useless around here. We've called him before and was told "you might as well just shoot the dogs because that's all I'm going to do".

We've confronted the neighbors several times about their dogs. The husband said, "if they're a problem, shoot them". The wife denies they're a problem. (You'd think she'd wise up after they started disappearing...)

Also, while I DO plan on talking to them again, I can't prove it was their dogs because I didn't see anything except the wounds on my horse. I do think it's safe to say it was their dog. 2+2 tends to equal 4. Dogs have beena problem in the past, one is limping...

Why do folks who live in the country think it is OK for their dogs to run loose?
I am so sorry..
Our dog problems were mostly solved when our mini stud attacked the dog one day. He was limping too after that.

Poor guy. I'd say neighbor's dogs. Really, coyotes aren't going to try to take a full sized horse, especially alone. We have the occasional coyote here, too. The horses don't even get upset. A peaceful co-existence I guess.

Thankfully it isn't too too bad.

I am so sorry about what happened to Kayode. Someone posted the SSS rule on the boards a while back. Shoot , Shovel and Shut up.
My neighbors don't keep their dogs in a fenced area and it is constant frustration for us too. If they aren't after our cat , they are getting into the garbage. I have only caught the Austrailian sheperd chasing Fancy once and when I drove up he took off, but I have not caught him since then. He had better stay away if he knows what is good for him.

We're very familiar with SSS rule. In this case, I do believe the first S will be followed by taking the dog home to its owners. Maybe THEN the wife will realize there's a problem.

Sad thing is, for everyone one she loses, whether it's shot, run over, stolen, or just goes missing, she replaces it with two.

We have a bad problem with coyotes down here. I doubt this was a coyote, being a single animal and very little damage. (Well, Kayode could be a bad @ss and have kicked butt before getting too badly hurt, I suppose.) There's a pack that runs this neighborhood that's well over 100. There's been several hunts, with many taken. But yet people are still losing calves and lambs, as well as other animals, in large numbers. It seems they multiply very quickly down here... Oh and they are breeding with dogs...Wonderful, huh?

I don't know why peopl elet their dogs run loose. What really bothers me is I try real hard to be responsible with my dogs. My wanderer is tied up when outside so he doesn't go anywhere. My others are trained to stay in a certain area, or a certain distance around one of us. I never leave them out unattended. And I have to live next to someone who cares very little for their dogs. I highly doubt they have their shots, and Kayode is almost due for his. I just hope I don't have to worry about anything on that front...

Oh man, so sorry to hear about Kayode. I agree, probably the neighbors' loose dogs.

As far as Kayode's shots- he probably still has good immunity as they last at least as long as the directions call for....and in some cases longer. But, better to be really safe than sorry - I'd just give them early.

I'd also be doing some target practice, just to be ready!

Another option would be to somehow GET the dogs (i.e. - contain them in some way) and then... take them to the pound! And give the pound the lady's information so they can get a hold of her and fine her! Maybe she'll listen to some threatening letters from Animal Control re: FINES, since she won't listen to reason from anybody else.

So sorry this happened. Thankful that it's not as bad as the situation with Shiloveshorses...

I don't know why people think it's okay to let their dogs run wild. They don't let their kids or horses run wild (well, maybe SOME do, but I don't! )... I just don't understand. Hope you get this figured out and solved. That's the last thing you need to deal with in your pregnancy.

Here is to a speedy recovery for Kayode.

We have problems with coyotes here to, but what the people do here that have sheep and goats is they have two or more of the herd dogs with them at all times. They live with the sheep and goats.
They have had no more problems with the coyotes or other dogs.

They have the Great Pyraneise (sp).

Something to check into.

So sorry to hear about your boy! Healing prayers your way.

I'm familiar with the SSS Rule also. There were some dogs that would rome the neighborhood on a regular basis and come into MY yard to bark at me. I also have children. They finally broke the last straw. They got into my fenced backyard and attacked my rabbits. Well one is no longer and the other hasn't dared come back.

I hope this situation gets taken care of one way or another.

Hmmm....I'd introduce some dogs to Betsy. I don't know if you have a Betsy but mine is long and black and speaks 3 languages...buck shot, rat shot or slug.
Hope Kayode has a quick recovery.

Poor Kayode.... Give him a treat from me - and shot a horse-chasing-Kayode-biting dog while you are at it

I don't know how I missed this, but I'm sorry to hear about Kayode!

I don't know why people let their dogs just run around lose...I get on to mine for barking from behind the fence.

I guess since people live out in the country they think its OK for their dogs to run around and attack whatever it pleases.

Kayode is doing fine. The wounds are healing nicely, so now it's just a "wait and see" to make sure he didn't catch anything because of the bites. I'm sure he'll be fine though.

I'm not happy about the neighbors letting their dogs run loose, but there's not too much I can do to convince them otherwise. They just don't care what happens to the dogs. I don't understand why they have them in the first place...

Glad to hear that he's healing well.

My mother has a lot of problems with neighbors' dogs as well - she's had to put up 6' kennels for all of her dogs to keep them protected from wandering dogs

You know, I must admit, it's not like I have NEVER had a dog take off on me, BUT, it has never been something that I just allowed - and if said dog needed stronger containment - well, that's what they got!

Although with the way I see kids acting these days, its no wonder that the dogs don't behave

Is this the point where people look at me funny when I advocate shooting the dogs?

Just checking.
