Grooming in winter

I was wondering if you guys groomed your horses the same ways you groom them in the winter? My horses are so hairy right now, it's hard to brush deep... Any tips?

Avoid water-based products mainly. And it's kind of nice when the monster isn't able to wallow in the mud . . . I can get by with maybe 2 grooming sesions a week instead of getting after him every single day.

This is my favorite wintertime grooming aide . . .it's a jelly brush that is really mild on the skin, but gets in past the winter fur. When I've swiped a ocuple of times, I just peel the carpet o'fur off the brush.

And I also just found something similar to this one below, but it's a little more spiked, almost like a human hairbrush with spikes that are maybe 1/8 inch long. That's working pretty well too.

I like the jelly brush too( like the picture above), they work great. I also use a tail brush all over to get deep into the coat and to finish (I love this tool) a grooming block.

I love the grooming mitts with the nubbies too - you can really clean them up well and they love it It also helps get down under the winter hair and will assist in preventing rain rot...

grooming blocks are little hand held porous blocks that really scrape the loose fur and dirt right off. And then the block gets dull you can scrap it against something like concrete down to a new layer.. they kind of look like a really hard sponge. They work wonders.

The real question is - can you get a really thickly mittened hand into one of those jelly brushes?

I use a big toothed flexible rubber curry, a medium brush and a soft brush, same as in the summer time. Once they start to shed I break out the shedding blade, they all seem to love that thing.

Another slicker block devotee here. Since it warmed up here (well, above -10 degrees, it's almost been right at freezing everyday), my wooly mammoth has been shedding like it's May. The block does not get clogged with all that fur, so I start with that, go all around him, brush as much of that fur off as I can, then I use the gel mitt, then the rubber curry, then another round with the medium brush, then finally, another round with the slicker block. Finish it all off with the fine brush, and voila, I have a slick looking shaggy boy.
