I don't always groom them when they are eating, but I have done it. I usually pet them, check them for scrapes, burrs, etc.,just anything to let them know I am the boss. At other times I let them eat in peace,I don't have a set schedule but when I want to be next to them I expect them to know I am there and can and will expect them to be on good behavior.
When I'm showing we do intensive grooming/braiding/spraying; getting ready for the halter classes while they have thier breakfast. I always thought I was being nice giving something to do while I needed them to stand still.....I don't understand how/why it would make them not respect me. Did the article explain the why? Just curious......
I feed and groom sometimes but my fave is to bring them out to graze on my lawn and just relax together. I groom or read or we just stand. I hate when a horse wont let you near when they are feeding. I think it is disrespectful or fearful and neither is a good thing.
Well honestly I dont like "bossing"my horses around. There my best friends and thats how they are treated.I respect them and they respect me.I found that four out of five of my horses love being groomed or messed with any time. All of my horses do whatever I ask of them at any time without hesitation, but let someone else in there and it's a three ring circus! My one fillie I just got a few months ago wasnt used to being touched or handled at all and now she wont even touch her food unless I'm standing there petting her or grooming her.So I think the horse should tollorate it but if they dont like it then show them the respect and leave them alone, untill there done.
