Need some info on a brand (tattoo)

Hi there, i'm not sure this is the right place to post this question but here goes!! A friend of mine just bought a horse in the last month and she has a brand on her neck. We want to find out as much info as possible on this horse. I can't even figure out what breed she is??
She is not big maybe 15hh at the most all black with a tiny little bit of white on her forehead the size of a dime She was abused in her past, and when she was rescued last year she was starving and a rack of bones, she did however have a nice looking colt a month later!!
Anywho........... Her brand is under her mane "GP854" Would this be a farm brand?? My standardbred has a tattoo on his upper lip.
Any help would be great!! Just please point me in the right direction
Thanking all in advance!
Tina

I think it may be a freeze brand yet you never know. Is it a freeze brand?

Alot of the racing Standardbreds have a freeze brand on their necks too...

Any Tb that has raced in the last 22 years has a lip tattoo, but no brand..

I would guess, either a ranch brand, although most ranches bracd on the hip or shoulder, or a STB.....

Does she appear to be an Arabian? Here's a link to decoding those freeze brands, which are on the neck of the horse.

I definitely think a pic is in order to figure it out. But it sounds like a ranch brand to me.

I'll get my friend to take a picture of her and the brand. It looks to be a freeze brand (she is totally black and the numbers are white) She is not an arab and is fairly med build no dished face or ears pointed towards each other. I was thinking it is a farm brand??? They think she is only about 12-14yrs old.
If I can't figure out how to post pics i'll have to send them to somebody to post for me.
Hope to have a pic by mon a.m.
Thanks for the help so far.

We have a adopted mustang and he has a freeze brand on his neck but it's not definet numbers or letters, it's more like diffferent marks and such from what i could see. Are you numbers and letters definet or are you just guessing and putting the marks together to make that combination? Snickers would know alot more about mustang brands than i do, since we only have one and it's my husbands horse. But it was jsut a guess.

My Arabian has a freeze brand from his original owner. I asked why they branded him on the neck and was told it was so anyone could see it. Personally, I'm not crazy about the location, but there is nothing I could do. The white hair does tell you it's a freeze brand, but I'm not sure about what else it means. I bet it is a farm brand.

Could she be a former PMU mare? A lot of the PMU mares have ranch brands like that. The mothers of my two PMU fillies were named "ED 502" and "ED 491"!

As for breed, if she was a PMU mare, it could be any of a number of breeds. Many PMUs are drafts or draft crosses, but there are also a lot of Quarter Horses, Paints, Apaloosas, or TB crosses.

I forgot to say before, in the PMU mares I mentioned, the "ED" in their names stood for the farm name (Early Dawn Sport Horses). In one of my adult PMU mares, she has an RJ on her shoulder and a number on her hip. I looked back through all her paperwork and found that "RJ" were the initials of her original owner.

So if your mare was a PMU, the letters "GP" might give you a clue as to which farm she came from or the name of her original owner.

She's going to be taking a picture of her brand today, she was fishing yesterday with her hubby
I never thought of PMU farms that might be it?? I haven't seen her run so ican't say if she looks standardbred. Victor (my STBD) has a lip tattoo. I'm not sure if she is?? Would she have a lip tattoo also along with the brand? I'll get her to check.
Thanks for the help so far.
