Mixing salt with sand?

My dad sent me on an internet mission looking up how much salt to put in our indoor arena. I'm assuming he's meaning to mix it in the sand to keep it from getting dusty? Does anyone know if this could have adverse effects? Or, does anyone know how much to mix into the sand?

Any advice on other inexpensive alternatives would be appreciated, too.

The one time that I helped to salt an indoor arena we just put it in a fertilizer spreader and went to it. I think we went over the entire arena twice. I don't know how often the owner spread it though. We did it both for the dust and to keep it from freezing solid in the winter.

The section “Water, Water Everywhere” has some interesting information.

None of this information is very specific.
All I know is that you spread the rock salt over the arena then soak the arena with a lot of water.
Salt is not particularly good for the horse’s hooves, or the leather on your saddle and tack.
As far as I know most people in our area control dust by watering the arena.
But then again we don’t have to deal with freezing weather very often.
