Aw, he has a sweet face! You mentioned his cranky faces he makes. He might just be unhappy being stalled. Standardbreds aren't usually stalled full time like the Thouroughbreds are.
I think he'll be beautiful once he gets off the racing feed and work schedule and gets some regular groceries into him, he does look thin in the pictures but he's probably just in racing form.

He's approx. 17hh. The pictures actually make him look smaller then he is. He is a huge monster.

He is under weight, they're trying to get that weight back up, but with the work he does i don't blame him for being thin...Once I get him and he goes out to pasture with hardly ever working he should beef up. I'm just wondering if this is a sign that he's a hard keeper. I can't handle another one of those.

He does get outside for about 5 hours a day. So he does get out. He just puts on a show with his sour looks. I just laugh at him though.

hahahaha...that is def. me....in my barn gear. I get laughed at ALL the time when I'm in my barn gear....sigh...but my horses don't care. I'm sure they like it better...i don't give them trouble when they slim me.

I think I'm about 5'4 tall. Vance is a big boy...i can't see over his back!! I think he'd be alot of fun to ride, but i'd need a lader to get on

Hello There!

I, too, own a Standarbred. He is a wonderful guy with a past shrouded in mystery. He's 14 and his previous owners don't know much about where he's been. There are no tattoos, freeze brands or cryo marks to indicate he ever raced but I definitely know he was trained to pace!!! We've been working together for just over a year now and he's learned SO much! I just about had the perfect Western Pleasure Jog out of him the other day - of course, with the help of my wonderful coach!!! Like everyone else's post indicates - patience and time and he'll come around. My guy has a definite Roman nose - see the picture.
