advice for tree chewing

I have 3 mares who have picked up tree chewing. They only do it when there is no grass to graze on. I am wondering what you guys use to prevent this, I would like to use some kind of plastic to wrap around the the tress trunk . I have seen this done but don't know what they use. any advice???

You can either fence off a small area around the trees, or wrap them in horse fence wire. I think I would stay away from plastic. They may chew that and eat some of it. I know my horses would

Actually, chicken wire that has been doubled wrap would be the best. May I also suggest placing some small piles of hay around the paddock area to prevent the boredom and to simulate grazing when there is little to no grass.

Last year my horses ate trees, this year they are not. Nothing has changed. We put fencing around the trees they didn't get to last year (galvanized and/or chicken wire)---but I honestly haven't seen them even nibble.

Not necessarily. I have hay out 24/7 and my horses have stipped the bark and leaves off (well as far high as they could go) all the trees that are in their new paddock.

Just currious, how many trees are out there??

Rubbing the tree with ivory soap stops chewing. They hate the taste, and it's cheap...

We used chicked wire and it worked pretty well except for one horse who was very persistent.
