cheap heating oil

well, i just read something very interesting and timely, although i wish i had thought of it at the beginning of summer.........diesel fuel is the same as home heating oil, but lots cheaper...........get a 10 gal dedicated gas can for the diesel, an every time you fill up the car, get a can of diesel, and put it in the home oil tank.........

Just FyI: you are right- the are essentially the same thing- they are very close to each other, but diesel(#2) for vehicles is different then that of fuel oil (#1), diesel for vehicles is dirtier, has additives included that #1 (fuel oil) does not have- so #2 diesel may leave more soot if burned in the furnace. #1 will burn hotter as well.
I would think unless there is a huge price difference, it is not worth substituting one for the other.

#2 will also gel up when it gets really cold, FYI.

Doesn't work that way in Ontario. Diesel fuel has road tax added whereas home heating oil doesn't. It was my understanding home heating oil was dirtier than the fuel otherwise everyone would order it for their furnaces then put it in their vehicles.

The new, ultra low sulphur diesel fuel would be ok, but I strongly doubt you would save any money burning it, as its still running over $3 a gallon.

Marine diesel or equipment diesel is dirt cheap, but illegal to run in vehicles on the highway. It would cause the proplems mentioned above.
