money saving coupons on things you actually use

This idea started as an elementary school project in letter writing, with unexpected results.

If I use a product that I really like, I'll email the company and tell them. Many times the company will send out really good coupons in appreciation for your comments. I just did this recently with a baby food company that I like. They sent 5 coupons on the mail, four for 55 cents off and one for a completely free product.

Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't, but all it wastes is a few minutes of your time to send an email and sometimes the coupons are really good!

Do you have any information about the elementary class that started the project?

IE:
- grade levels of the students
- companies they wrote to
- type of letter writing skills they were practicing

I'm thinking this could be a great way to teach my kids letter writing skills, as well as showing them a "reward" for doing a good job.

We did this project somewhere between 4th and 6th grade. We were told to pick a product we liked and write to the company. I wrote to the Bazooka bubble gum company because I really like Bazooka Joe gum. I think the purpose was to teach kids proper letter format, proper sentences, spelling, grammer, etc. I think it was also to show that there is someone on the other side of your favorite toy, food, etc. I remember how excited people were to get letters back from their chosen company and how unhappy kids were if they never heard back.

I think breakfast cereal companies were a popular choice as well as any candy bar or gum company. I think one kid wrote to Hot Wheels and got a free matchbox car.

That's awesome, and definitely something that sounds promising for a couple of homeschool boys who haven't learned letter writing in public school.
