[quote=divinemisselle;1582592]Fells Naptha would be a great addition to this laundry soap recipe as well! Super stuff for stains!

Where can that be found?

Many grocery stores carry it. If it's not with the bath soap try the laundry section.

Detergent section. It's a yellow bar.

I really want to try this too. Our stuff gets so dirty being in the barn all the time. I find most laundry soap just just not cut it. I wonder if you added some Dawn dish detergent for stubborn greasy stains?

I know this is totally off topic, but I wanted to say to my AT&T customer service operator. Happy Birthday!

(Funny how one calls to make a payment and end up telling the CSR about homemade laundry soap, and then sharing the website and directing her to the thread so she can garnish the recipe as well! )

I can see the sales reports for the makers of the aforementioned ingredients skyrocketing after we all try our little science experiment this weekend!

That is hilarious!! That sounds like something I would do. I get into some of the oddest conversations with customer service rep's.

Happy Birthday AT&T CSR!!

This is definately something I want to try. Our h/e washer does not get the stains out with regular detergent, I'm interested to see if it will work with the homemade detergent.

Me too ...I once had a twenty minute call with a rep from an answering service that turned into a conversation about a sick horse I had, she had wonderful advice and was very sympathetic. That very same lady ended up becoming my mother-in-law. She had no idea she was talking to the girl who was dating her son, and I had no idea I was talking to my boyfriends mom.

We use a lot of borax here. Its great for cleaning the grease and stains off mechanics hands. If you put it in a spray bottle with some water it makes and excellent bathroom/kitchen cleaner that won't put bad chemicals down your septic system. Plus you can use it to make flubber for the kids.

Would you use the Fells Naptha as your bar of soap, or is it in addition to the bar of soap (and if that's the case, how much of it would you add?)

How much Dawn did you add?

Thanks RR for posting the idea!

You're very welcome! I just wish I had thought of posting it earlier.

I've read that many people use the Fells Naptha for the bar in the recipe. If I can find it here that's what I'm planning on using in mine.

I haven't yet made my own detergent, but can say that I've been using my own home-made spray cleaners. Basically water, vinegar, some bar soap, and some scenting (I think I posted the actual recipe already in the original money saving thread).

Anyway, what I have to add to this thread is that ...
a) "castille" bar soap is supposed to be good for this kind of thing, it's a vegetable-oil based soap, made from olive oil, coconut oil, or other vegetable-based oils. It is easier to disolve than some bar soaps, and is supposed to be better for the allergic, tho I won't go so far as to say "hypoallergenic"
b) I kinda hate to post this but you know how back in the 70's (or was it 80's?) they took phosphates out of everything because it was turning lakes and streams into super algae blooms ... well phosphates are wonderful for turning whites really white again ... and Spic & Span still has phosphates in it. So if\when I ever get around to making my own soap based on what others post here, I will most likely make two batches, one that's phosphate free for 95% of my washing, and one that's got just a smidge of spic & span thrown in so I can do my whites every now and then with it ... I hope sparingly isn't too terrible for the environment!!!

Well I mixed it all up [went easy enough] so now I'll wait and run some laundry in tomorrow and see how it works. Thanks Rubysrider.
My little one had a blast helping me mix it up. I added a cup of Dawn dish detergent to try to boost the stain lifting aspect, did not want to add any more than that as I'm worried about it oversudsing. I ended up with a murky green liquid [the sunlight bar was yellow and the Dawn blue] that smells slightly lemony.
So far so good.

just a cautionary: My mom used Fels Naptha for stains, I seem to remember it being strong. With Shi's sensitive skin you might want to consider something pretty mild, like ivory or a castile, neutrogena makes a nice soap too, but spendy. JMO

Thanks for posting that! I hate not have white whites especially towels, I think I will add a bit to my towel wash and see what happens.

My daughter suffers from really itchy skin also. The best thing that works for her is baby oil. I run a tub of warm water and squirt baby oil in and she will take a cup and just baste herself all over. Do not use too much oil as it is very slippery. No more itchies for her.

Murky green liquid, sounds very appealing. Do let us know how it works!
