[quote=divinemisselle;1582592]Fells Naptha would be a great addition to this laundry soap recipe as well! Super stuff for stains!
Where can that be found?

We use a lot of borax here. Its great for cleaning the grease and stains off mechanics hands. If you put it in a spray bottle with some water it makes and excellent bathroom/kitchen cleaner that won't put bad chemicals down your septic system. Plus you can use it to make flubber for the kids.

You're very welcome! I just wish I had thought of posting it earlier.
I've read that many people use the Fells Naptha for the bar in the recipe. If I can find it here that's what I'm planning on using in mine.

I haven't yet made my own detergent, but can say that I've been using my own home-made spray cleaners. Basically water, vinegar, some bar soap, and some scenting (I think I posted the actual recipe already in the original money saving thread).
Anyway, what I have to add to this thread is that ... a) "castille" bar soap is supposed to be good for this kind of thing, it's a vegetable-oil based soap, made from olive oil, coconut oil, or other vegetable-based oils. It is easier to disolve than some bar soaps, and is supposed to be better for the allergic, tho I won't go so far as to say "hypoallergenic" b) I kinda hate to post this but you know how back in the 70's (or was it 80's?) they took phosphates out of everything because it was turning lakes and streams into super algae blooms ... well phosphates are wonderful for turning whites really white again ... and Spic & Span still has phosphates in it. So if\when I ever get around to making my own soap based on what others post here, I will most likely make two batches, one that's phosphate free for 95% of my washing, and one that's got just a smidge of spic & span thrown in so I can do my whites every now and then with it ... I hope sparingly isn't too terrible for the environment!!!

Well I mixed it all up [went easy enough] so now I'll wait and run some laundry in tomorrow and see how it works. Thanks Rubysrider.
My little one had a blast helping me mix it up. I added a cup of Dawn dish detergent to try to boost the stain lifting aspect, did not want to add any more than that as I'm worried about it oversudsing. I ended up with a murky green liquid [the sunlight bar was yellow and the Dawn blue] that smells slightly lemony. So far so good. |

Thanks for posting that! I hate not have white whites especially towels, I think I will add a bit to my towel wash and see what happens. My daughter suffers from really itchy skin also. The best thing that works for her is baby oil. I run a tub of warm water and squirt baby oil in and she will take a cup and just baste herself all over. Do not use too much oil as it is very slippery. No more itchies for her. |
