HAY

I got in 90 bales of first cutting orchard grass and clover this past Friday--paid $6.00 in the field. Saturday, we brought in another 107 bales of orchard grass 1st cutting for $5.00 a bale in the field. Yesterday, we went to look at orchard grass and clover in the field for $8.00. I may get some second cuttings from that guy later on. I cannot believe I am paying that much for hay. I am so used to $4.50 max. Had I known the hay prices were going to go through the roof---I wouldn't have made so many horses my pets!

Maybe we can make this a hay network thread to help each other through any rough times ahead.

The guy we get our hay from is getting his first cutting in now. It'll be back down to $4 a bale. Last year it was $3. We cleaned the loft of our barn so I can store more this winter. This past winter I had to go to the co-op and get a few loads when it got closer to the end.

Hay is always a problem for me. I have no where to store it. I can only get 50 or so at a time.

My father makes his own hay- he cut about 1/3 of one of our fields: then it thunderstormed all over it.

We can't win.

We currently have a 20-30 acre field that needs to be hayed approx.. 400-500 bales, willing to split the hay or pay to have someone come out and do it... Anyone know of someone who could help me?? I'm desperate! Lol.

the hayfields around here look GREAT this year...as high as an elepahant's eye! we did about 1/4 of our 14 acre hayfield and got almost 300 bales and knocked down another 5 acres at another farm and it was the most beautiful orchard grass and clover ( we fertilized it) and it was almost up to my shoulders but man its nice... all the rain we had made the stuff grow sooooo much! best first cutting we've had in years. i hope the weather cooperates for the baling and doesnt rain on it before we can get it baled and hope we get enough rain to make a good second cutting, maybe even a third cutting.... we might have some to sell and it seems we have had 3 other people around here ask us to cut theirs not because they want hay but for us to keep it all cause the stuff is so tall they just want it cut...so if things are this good for the hay business everywhere , it looks like its starting out to be a great year for horse owners!

I bought 30 bales of Orchard/Alf the other day for $3.50 a bale. I've already arranged to get 200 bales of Orchard/fescue/clover for the winter. They store it for me and he delivers me 25 bales at a time, it'll be the last cut of the year. I paid $2.50 for those. I'm also getting 8 5x5 round bales of orchard/fescue for $30/bale. My horses do great on the mixed grass, no mares to worry about the fescue mixed in either. My hay guy is comming through for me this year!

I don't know who does it, but the Bull Run Battlefield park was just hayed last week - I saw about 15 trailers and 6 full sized pickup trucks stacked to capacity with some very nice looking green hay. If the weather keeps goin like it has been, they'll get two or three more cuttings from there by fall.

That's gotta be a nice contract - get paid to mow the grass, and more than likely paid to deliver it somewher else.

This is the only year my dad has ever decided not to cut hay on the farm; just when it is beautiful and nice weather for it, too

I'm getting second cutting hay tomorrow----somewhat early for that, but I'll take it. I told my friend I would buy the whole field (1st cutting yielded 450 bales)----unfortunately, we are expecting only a little over 100 bales this time. I don't know what that is saying about hay around here. It is also going to cost me 6 bucks out of the field.

Anbody else having bad second cuttings of hay? Seems like most of the fields are producing very little hay the second time around due to no rain. I'm still about 170 bales short for the year, but I think I will have enough room for all of it. We couldn't have a hayshed built due to the high price of aluminum---so we are packing hay in every nook and crannie we have.

We do round bales now as they're much easier. We pay $60 per round bale and this last one was gone in a week ... but it was a nice cut. The last one we had they left about one square bale left, but it wasn't that great of a bale and we were surprised they ate that much considering it got rained on.

Square bales were too much of a hassle, especially to keep weight on our guys. They got 2 - 3 flakes per feeding, but it wasn't enough so we went to round bales. I think Orchard/Timothy mix is around $4.50-$5.00.

We paid $8.00 for one square bale of straight Alfalfa from Alabama(I think) when we lived in Maryland, that stuff was bright green.
