showing TB yearling in hand

We had a very nice TB colt this year. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with him. He was going to be a sales yearling, but the market is bad and he is one of the niced foals I've ever had. So I'm going to keep him. We may race him ourselves. I would like to show him next year as a yearling to get him off the farm, and get him used to going different places. I've never shown babies. Is there anyone here that does. I don't even know where to start looking for shows. I know there is Upperville and Devon, but are there smaller shows around?

I think that is a grand plan for him.
The more he gets out and sees things is a great plan for him no matter what the career choice.

Look around at the local trade magazines, The Paper Horse is a good one.
Something that lists local events, auctions and horse shows.

You can always check your local tack shops, local facilities that give lessons. Sometimes they have smaller schooling shows.

He's a beauty, what is he 6 months old? Can you please post a bigger pix of him? I'd like to him 'up close' As far as shows, I don't have big ones in mind that you didn't name, but tack shops, ect like mentioned above, is a good place to start.

If you just need to get him out, you may want to look at local western shows that have halter classes. You probably won't win anything, but you will get him off the property and into the ring for less than $10 or $20. I know that Prince George's EC hosts shows through MSA that offer a few "model" classes that are a step between backyard and national level. The USEA has a new Future Event Horse program. Horses are shown individually. There are quite a few in MD, VA, and PA. Yes, the bigger classes at Upperville and Devon are fun, but you should have some experience before tackling those. Check the USAE website for hunter-breeding classes, there's more than just Devon and Upperville. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. It was very helpful. If I can get a good current picture of him, I'll post it. Right now he's a filthy little fur ball. Well, not so little. He is up to my chin, and nearly in a full sized halter. He was born the beginning of April. He may turn out too big to race. I hope not, but it is a good possibility. So, getting him out, and taking him to a few horse shows just makes sense.
