Looking for a farrier because current farrier is an idiot

Hi, I have had my horse for over 2 years and he has had no hoof problems until this new farrier. He is losing shoes and now has glue shoes on which I don't believe he needs. My farrier has been putting the nail too close to the beginning of the hoof that it just breaks off. I know it can't go too far back either but still my poor horse has these glue on shoes which are positioned to where he can form navicular which I know won't happen over one time of having glue on shoes on, but still. And my horse can't go barefoot because he is tender without shoes on. Then my farrier said to me, I should be careful now that my horse has glue on shoes, he will be fresh under saddle. I mean, that was just the oddest thing to say. I mean I know part of the reason my horse is losing shoes is because he steps on himself but I put bell boots on and he gets them off. Smart horse. But this is the farrier's fault and he is messing up. I'm just so stressed and I know I have to find a new farrier but I hope until my horse is due again he will be alright with these glue ons. Does anybody in maryland know of any good farriers that can fix the problem. I'm sorry about the rambling, I'm just stressed over everything.

No kidding. This area is known for horrible farriers. I've been here for 10 yrs, and I'm still looking. My current farrier has all my hoses with long toes and underrun heels. The horses weren't like that when I bought them. Problem is that this farrier is a friend of mine. He also bought a yearling from me. But, for the sake of the horses, I have to make a change. If you are on the Eastern shore, I have some people you could try.

1. Pat Kearns. I did use him in the past, and he was a superior farrier. He is part time, and that was the problem. I had 2 fillys racing out of Fair Hill. I had one of them entered at Phila Park and she had sprung a shoe. I had too many problems getting him out for the race horses, so I had to get a farrier that was at Fair Hill. Pat decided not to show up at the farm for those horse after that. He can be a bit of a prima dona, but he's worth putting up with.

2. I am going to try Blackburn forge next. You can google the web site.

3. Matt Taimuty also looks like he might know what he's doing. He also has a web site.

Good luck. Let us know how you make out.
