People with horses who live near me...

On Monday night, Tuesday morning-sometime during all the rain that we got-my new stallion was attacked. Judging by the marks on him and information found on the internet and the Puma association of Ontario-it was a cat.
Sunny is ok-a little stressed out (understandably) but I wanted to share pics-mostly because I was not aware there actually are cats in the area. Sunny was/is pastured by himself and is 16.2hh...that he was attacked still baffles me. There is not one mark on his legs~~at first I had suspected barbed wire but these are not barbed wire marks.

Poor baby... but if he were laying down, those would be the marks he would have..

Scary - and unusual for one to attack a horse that big.. I wonder if the storm confused the animal, and he may have come upon him accidently..

Ouch, Indeed. Since he's a stallion, look around for a dead/dying cat - I bet he gave at least as bad as he got.

I am sure he gave as good or better than he got. He was very wired in the afternoon and kept looking to the back bush-not the mares like he usually does.

There is barbed wire along the fence line HOWEVER in Sunny's field he also has an electric fence line about 3 feet from the fence to keep him off the permanent fence. Sunny doesn't lay down out in the open-he opts to come back to his run-in.

I tried to get him back out in the grass field this morning and he was not having any of it.

I wonder if the cat is still near by - Sunny may have injured it.. or the scent is lingering..

That poor boy.. and poor you.. I would be carrying a weapon with me if I went out in those fields..

Oh poor guy. Even if the cat is not still out there he'll still remember it was there and smell it. No wonder he doesn't want to go back out. I hope that he heals well without any problems or infection.

Pumas? I'll have to go check out that website...as our cottage is on the Severn River. We have rattlesnakes and bears to worry about already so I'm not thrilled about another wild animal to add to the list.

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry to hear about this horrible experience. I guess you can't put a donkey in with him as he would probably attack the donkey, wouldn't he?

Oh My Gosh !!! Im not too far from you , Im just east of Coldwater (about 10 minutes) . We have had reports of a cougar in our area the last 2 years . The neighbour down the road videotaped a cougar going thru his backyard. I think it was about 2 or 3 months ago , there was 2 cougars spotted by a few people just outside of Coldwater. A trapper friend of ours says that them cats have become more common in the last 10 years here in Ontario. I really hope your horse didnt have any real damage done to him and hope he heals fast. If you want the name and number of th trapper guy we know , just let me know , he is from your area.

Coldwater is right off of Highway 400 just past the Moonstone, Mount St. Louis ski hill as you travel north.

Thanks everyone for your concern. Sunny is getting better-his chest is the worst but I have been using SWAT to keep of the flies and help with the healing.
I feel so bad for the big guy...arriving in Canada and being greeted by a cat.
We think that part of the problem is the farm just down the road-who slaughters their own animals and throws the reminants out in the fields instead of disposing of it properly-drawing in wild animals. It's against the law so Min. of Ag. will be told about this problem for starters.

Are you serious? That's so illegal it's not even funny. JUst asking for problems when you start doing crazy stuff like that.

I hope Sunny continues to improve. Has this whole incident given him any trust issues or anything?

Yeah...I have to be very careful patting him on the butt or walking behind him. We are glad he is healing quickly as he might be hitting a couple of shows in the next couple of months-see if we can get his Honor Roll (1 point short).

Do you have brush, trees, especially pine and spruce in the pasture? When the flies are bad my horses look like that too. A cat will try to bring down an animal closer to it's own size or smaller as they use their weight to bring it down. That is why they go after calves, foals, etc. The pic of the chest was very slow to down load-I didn't see it. My horses get the scratches on their sides and a few on the chest.

Nope no brush in his field...just some lupine flowers and grass.
He is healing up very well-obviously the chest is taking longer but great stuff that SWAT is.
