Help needed in Northern Ontario

It was with no great surprise that I was told this morning that there was a farm in the north with more then 70 head of horses that were being starved slowly. Here is the email I received.
"Hi everyone without getting into to much crazy details I NEED HELP , 4 months ago I sold two horses to a lady now they are bones I am in tears as I write this , its appauling that APPRARENTLY the humane society has been there numerous times and nothing has been done they tell people that they are not capable of handling the amount of horses if they were to intervene?

also she now has 70 horses there and they are lucky if they are being fed 2 LARGE sqaure bales between them a day ? do the math on that and you tell me how many horses are lucky to get fed. I have photos as we went out to see them today for the first time, I feel I am at blame as I should have checked out this farm more before I sold them

What I was wondering is what steps can be taken if the HUMANE society isnt doing there part ? is there anything to do ? apparently this has been going on for a few years now , I was unaware of this situation before I was handed monies for my horses , I even offer to buy them back today and she laughed in my FACE .

again I have photos of some of the horses on the property . IMAGINE this 20 horse in a paddok NO MANURE , as soon as one horse would pass manure another would EAT IT

I cannot believe I am sitting here writing this , I am so upset , not sure where to go or start Please remember I am in Ontario Canada any idea's or suggestions ?? "

Here are pictures that have been forwarded to me. Sadly this is the same place that bought my dun stallion and one of my weanlings last year. I have been told the dun is doing 'ok' but the weanling is rough and is in the same stall as the horse in a couple of pics.
I am starting with a pick of Gunner at 4 months old-1 week before he was weaned and then 1 month later

the colt he is sharing his stall with.

The humane society is unable to handle this amount of horses so are stating they are getting cared for to the minimum allowed(nice eh?)

There is no use trying to reason with these people-they see nothing wrong with how they are caring with their horses.

A girl I know sold the colt(who has full siblings that are showing halter and under saddle) that is in the same stall as GUnner and the black mare-BTW-that black mare was a halter/showmanship horse and is not supposed to look like that.
I have suggested she contact teh local paper and newstation with the pics and make it public-force the issue on the Humane Society-as well as contact the police. Sometimes you just have to do that.

the only thing with that...is that she will need to be very careful...as it could be considered slander especially if it will affect their business. Tell her to spread the word...in the horse industry word travels quickly you will be surprised that amount of people that a story like that would hit home to. I know its brutal ...those people need to be reported and have those horses taken away and placed in proper care.

I really dont understand how they afford all of these horses...Do they run a camp or organization.. Do they have a website (PM) me if they do...I would be interested in contacting them to see if they would be interested in selling Gunner

Yes htey have a website, they run a trail riding stable.
I have info now to report the abuse to the OSPCA but the more people who comment about it the more likely they are to be pressured to do something-even if they take only the worst.
What we need now is #'s that people could look after IF they do start taking them-their concern is not having a place to put them for care and if we can alleviate that by having X number of foster homes then it would help I think.

Count me in too if you need help. What is the location?? Anywhere near me?? I have alot of hay to spare and can take on 2 horses if it comes to that.

Just wanted to say l emailed the SPCA link that was listed and they did email me back.

this is the reply l got :

Thank you for your concern and offer of help.
We have the pictures that you are speaking of, but we do not have the location of this farm or even if it is in our jurisdiction. It is unclear whether this farm that you are concerned about is one of the farms in the XXX. We are unable to recognize the farm from the photo's.

We are awaiting more detailed information so we can start an investigation into this case.
I will forward your message to our inspector.

So l think they are taking this seriously, but l don't understand if someone has sent them the pictures why wouldn't that person be brave enough to tell them where the farm is located. lt must be very frustrating for all of the peolple involved.

I think she just forgot-I have been giving her all the ideas that are coming to me and sent her a note urging her to give the name and website of the farm so they can be contacted and a proper investigation started on them.

For me it would be a long trailer ride for a horse....but like I said if Its Gunner ..I will cover the cost

Good, maybe once they know which farm it is and if it is in fact within their area something can be done.

l will never understand the mentality that allows people to just "NOT FEED" an animal under their care.

If you don't have enough hay, buy some, if you can't afford it, sell some horses, if you can't sell them, lease them or give them away, just don't leave them standing in a field slowly starving.

If the humane society has been there and not taken any animals, then they must be deemed ok. If more needs to be done, they must first educate the owner and an order can be issued, with time given for the owner to comply. Fat horses are not a sign of good health and they develop the same complications as obese people.
