Interesting Horse Deal

Ok, well I browse craigslist daily (when bored) in the surrounding areas including NY, NH and VT. Mostly just the farm and garden section. Well last week I came across a $200 horse! So I showed him to hubby and hubby says well he could be a resale project, or maybe I'll like what he turns into and keep him. He is a 3 year old ungelded, appy paint cross (supposedly really good breeding on each side) and a nice color (sorrel with 4 socks and a blaze, with some roaning). He is un broke but hubby has LOTS of experience with that so no problem there. He leads, loads, lunges, etc.

Anyway, so we spoke to the lady about him, and arranged to go look at him (3 hour drive each way) but only if he had coggins and such so that if we liked him we could take him then and not make another trip.
He doesn't have his coggins "but had a few in the past and has never left her farm" She is sure that he is fine.
We were going to pay the extra fee ($72) for the coggins/vet trip, if we liked him and too him home. She on the other hand doesn't want to get the coggins done unless we KNOW we will take him. She wants us to take the 6 hour road trip to see if we like him then go back in 2 weeks to pick him up when coggins comes back.

So what do you all think? Anyone close to Wells, NY that wants to check him out and see if he is worth our trip?

Anyone know this person by any chance?

What do you all think about the Coggins issue?

Thanks in advance!!

I would be skeptical about someone who did not want the Coggins test done when you are paying for it. Why would she care?

He's a cute horse. Don't know anything about her.

Me too - but on the other hand, if you think you are going to like him, you can make arrangements for a vet to go take the coggins before you head out there.. I would hesitate to give her the money outright as it might not happen..

My vet does coggins in turn around time, 72 hours. Pull blood, take to lab. and run test, than they fax results to vet. and they put on cogins paper, with photo of horse. Perhaps their vet is just a up to date as my vet and Lab.

It is a touchy situation, do you or don't you? if other test have come up clean, than chances are next one will be also.

Thanks for the input guys!

She has said that if we send her the $72 for coggins she will do it, but she can't afford to "waste" the money on coggins if we arn't going to pay for it... Which I thought was interesting.

Horselady, who do you use for a vet? How much is it to get the rush coggins?

The issue is not really the timing that it will take to get the coggins but that she doesnt want to do it at all. She said recently that none of people she has sold horses to have asked for a coggins. That just doesnt sound right.

We are going to think about it for a couple days and then possibly send her the check for coggins and when it comes back negative we'll go see and maybe bring him home.

Thanks again! I'll keep you all up to date!

We use Equine Clinic at Oakencroft of Ravena, Here In NY. They use a lab in Schnectady, The last time I had coggins done, I thought, and was ready to pay extra.(75.00) office said no because of the quick turnaround time via the computor, getting results.
Send check have it done. I also have sold horses with no coggins, Gets done when horse is sold, sometimes. because they just stay here and have no exposure., Govnt, says it has to be done. only to keep track of horses that are bought and sold. As a reg, dealer I have to
show sales, buys, and whatevers. So I can understand where she is coming from. You want the little horse than seems like a good deal even with expenses.

Thanks for the info Horselady! that is great that your vet can do them so quickly!

She sold him to someone else though before we could decide if we were going to send the check. So oh well. Everything happens for a reason. The right one will come along.

Now I want to sell my mare and get a NICE ROPE horse.

I would say no. The current owner should pay for coggins. If it comes back negative, pay her back for it plus horse cost. If it's positive, saves you a dead horse and the $72.
