Asheville, NC?

**I HOPE this thread is allowed...I couldn't find anything that said this specifically was prohibited, but if it is, mods my feelings won't be hurt if you have to delete this **

Does anyone on here live in or near Asheville, NC or have in the past? I'm interested in knowing your opinions or experiences

I am seriously considering moving there from Southern California to finish up school at UNCA and seem to have virtually fallen in love with the city It seems like a really unique and comfortable town that would be a good match for me.

I think I will be going out to visit next month, but would anyone be able & willing to share any opinions or general information with me? Anything you'd like is readily welcomed

As a side note, I don't currently have a horse, but would be interested in at least riding while there...

Thanks in advance, and again sorry if this isn't allowed!

Shannon

I live about 75 miles from A'ville. LOVE, love love it. It is a very unique town and beautiful. Lots of leftover '60's types and mother earth types but they add flavor and color to this wonderful town. I went to Nursing School just south of A'ville over 30 years ago and always wanted to return to NC and was able to just 12 years ago. Haven't regretted it. Expensive and a popular vacation spot. I don't blame you for falling in love with it. UNCA has a lovely campus as well.

Don't know your riding preferences but about40 mile south is Tryon which is known for H/J types. There are lots of summer horse camps just north of the SC line. You can't go wrong moving to NC but it isi NOT southern CA. You may actually experience culture shock.

Hope this helps...

Thanks so much, and yes that definitely helps

I'm laughing because I put two of your statements together: "expensive" and "not southern CA." I'm looking at housing prices in Asheville and am just wowed for what you can find for not even 1/6 the price of a lesser quality house out here. Even rentals are less than 1/3 what we'd pay for a comparable apartment!

My aunt moved to Spotsylvania, VA from Orange County, CA a few years back and she--and her herd of horses-- love it. Another aunt & uncle just flew home to Myrtle Beach, SC after staying a week with us; they lived here their whole lives but decided to travel the country and fell in love with SC.

I guess I should have mentioned that yes, I ride H/J A little xc and dressage...Is there much foxhunting in the area? That is one of the things my aunt in VA absolutely LOVES about her new area.

Thanks so much!

My Mom's place is just 45-60 miles southeast of Asheville(just east of Tryon). She and my Dad just love it there. The people are very nice and there are lots of places to ride. We just rode at the Biltmore! It doesn't matter what type of riding you there will be some one else that does it also and you may even be able to do a lease or lease to own type of thing. We're from southeast Florida so things got cheaper up there, even around Asheville is cheaper than south Florida. Not to mention they have a change of season not an endless summer. I cannot wait until I can chisle my husband up and out fo Florida. When I do we'll be headed for western NC as well!

They have hunterpaces and hunter/jumper shows around Tryon. There is a place called F.E.N.C.E near Tryon where they have shows. Lots of horsey things in Western Carolina.
