Sounds to me like your horse was not started fully/properly.
Does your saddle fit him properly? The problems with the bit, the hopping, attitude, one lead at the canter all sounds to me like they rushed to start him, and did not give him a good foundation at all. Was the trainer an english/dressage trainer? Geez, for $5K I could have sold you a fantastic, well started horse with a basic dressage foundation in a second! What kind of breed is it? QH?
