Potoamac horse fever

I presume everyone saw the news storys about the increased cases of potomac fever in our area.

One part of the story I read said that we should have our horses boosted every 3 months since this is considered an outbreak.

So my question, has anyone talked to their vet about this? And if so what did they say?

I plan to call my vet tonight.

I haven't heard, but our horses get the Potomac boosters because they travel and drink water with other horses. I sent a message to Beth, I can assure you she will be on the phone with either Dr Becky or the other guy we use who's name escapes me at the moment. This was on the news? I never watch tv, what station?? I bet Dennis at Champions knows, he's well informed.

8 reported cases in the St Louis area. Beth thinks it is only spread by shared water sources, drinking in creeks/ponds/lakes/etc. Is this true? Not carried by 'skeeters?? Scary.

I think it's ingestion of mayflies or something like that. Hang on I'll see if I can find it.

I was planning to call him last night but ended having to meet with an insurance guy until after office hours. (on someone elses truck)

I'm waiting on this return call now.

I found it on stltoday.com.

The vet called back.

He suggested giving it IF you were planning to go into areas with lots of water and a known issue with it. He named Eminence specifically.

Then he says, on the other hand the injection is $20 with a second one 3-4 weeks later.

He's coming tomorrow afternoon to do our guys. For $40 x 2... not worth the risk.
