They are in the wrong place, wrong time...help!

We got a phone call a few minutes ago. It was one of the local horse traders. We don't buy, sell, or trade alot, but every now and then a nice one comes along and he will give us a call to see if we are interested. He has a few mares for sale, don't know when he got them, but most likely in the last day or two. They are broodmares. Alot of people around this area are really cutting back since the price of foals, and horses in general, are so cheap and they are getting rid of their broodmares. These mares are well bred and really cheaply priced. He says if he doesn't get them sold very soon (possibly tomorrow afternoon) he will call one of the other local traders and sell them for kill horses (that trader regularly takes a load to TX). All the local traders will get together at the sale tomorrow evening. I haven't seen the mares, but he told us how they were bred and that they are fat, nice mares. One is a granddaughter of Dual Pep and High Brow Hickory. One is a granddaughter of Dry Doc and Shot O Gin. The other is a daughter of Ferrari Tari and Hancock bred on bottom. They will be either bay or sorrel and if I remember correctly none are over 10 yrs old. If circumstances were different I would love to have the Dry Doc/Shot O Gin mare (according to her breeding, but haven't seen them yet) The Dual Pep mare is a little low in one hip from an injury (sounds like just the muscling - I have a mare that did the same thing and eventually leveled back out), but it does not affect her in any way as far as raising a foal - she is really cheap. According to the bloodlines he told us on the phone they should all be elligible for the foundation registries. I believe they are all open. I am not against horse slaughter, I think there are some circumstances where it is a good thing (hurt, disabled, old, or unmanageable horses for example) but in this case these are good mares and are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hate to see horses such as these being casualties of the economic issues we are facing right now. If you are interested in any of these PM me and I can either call for you or give you his phone number if you are interested in buying one (or more). I'll be up pretty late.

Man, I wish I could help you out. But right now it's just totally impossible. Hubby's not working and I'm scraping to take care of what I have and make ends meet. I hope someone here can help in some way, I'm really very sorry.

Sounds like some very nice mares. I wish we were in the market for more right now, but we have all the mares we need at this time.

What part of Missouri are they located in? Depending on where they are, I'll let my brother in law know. He may know someone. He's near Thayer, MO.

Yea, if I didn't already have too many I'd take the one. I guess I should have put prices - maybe that would help motivate someone to buy one. The one with the injured hip (I belive she is not lame or sore, but just lower on one side from an injury) he is asking around $200 for her and $500 (each) for the other two, but like any trader they usually will deal a little bit - especially if you took more than one.

My husband just talked to the trader. He is taking the mares to the sale with him this evening. He doesn't plan on running them through, but the killer buyers will be there and he will sell them out back. He says the Ferrari Tari mare is GEORGOUS, and all are fat and good mares. The breeder is downsizing is why he has them. Wish I could by them all and then find homes for them, but that really isn't an option for us right now.

I PM'd 99horses the phone numbers for the trader if anyone is interested. We will be leaving for the sale soon.

Well, I saw the Ferrari Tari mare. She went thru the sale. She is georgous! About 15 hands tall, sorrel with a blaze, big bodied but still very lady like, and fat and shiney. She really is a good looking, correct mare. Another trader, who also buys killer horses, bought her for around $400. He will most likely market her as a broodmare or rider. I don't know if she rides or not but he has a guy that rides for him that is really good at starting them. Hopefully she will do well for him, if not I'm afraid she will have a one-way ticket to TX. Earlier in the evening I had asked the original trader if he had sold any of the mares and he said one. I didn't ask which one, but assume he sold two of them since the other went thru the ring. I looked in his trailer, but those mares weren't in there, only a few yearlings. They could have been somewhere in another trailer. If the other two looked like the Ferrari Tari mare then it really is a shame to see them in this situation...I hear the bay one was/is even nicer.

I sure wish I could take one. I have a foxtrotter I am selling, but as everyone else, if I had the room for many, I would do it. I have resused one, that was well on its way to kill pin, and now it is the best little gal I have. It is a shame to see such a waste of a good sound horses. Well, hope they get good homes and your doing a good thing for them Lopin.

I didn't take them. I haven't talked to the guy since last saturday. I know one went to another trader/kill buyer. He will try to sell her to a good home before just shipping her out. I don't know where the other two went.

Were they sold at the Linwood sale? We do not sell any personal horses there, but my husband is a trainer and he works for a "trader" of sorts, and often has to ride them through the ring. Maybe we can meet there sometime? We can all only hope the market turns around, but with the price of feed who knows when that will be. This no-slaughter backlash is really hurting us all, especially the really good horses that can no longer find homes because the market is flooded. We just can't save them all. Although I do my best to sell the really good ones online for this trader...finding them good homes and getting him more for what he gets at the sale has started bringing him around.

That is why this guy called us, hoping that we would either take them or know someone else that would...but he only gave me a day or two. It was a shame to see fat, healthy, conformationally correct, well bred mares in this kind of situation. The sale was at Farmington, MO. Where is Linnwood?
