NOAA Emergency Alert Weather Radio
We bought one of the Oregon Scientific radios last year...both for use at home and while out horse camping.
The way they work...you enter your state and county-specific code in the radio, and if there is an alert (including weather, food safety, or other hazard), your radio will broadcast the voice alert warning. Our Governor's office said in a recent Post-Dispatch article that the single most important thing us Rural folks can do for our safety in Tornado season is to purchase an NOAA radio. Here in Lincoln county, they do a test every Wednesday between 10 AM and 1 PM so you can make sure you are getting the alerts. In standby mode, the radio does not broadcast UNTIL an alert is issued for your particluar county. We have the volume set loud so it will wake us up in the event of a tornado watch or warning late at night. http://www.oregonscientific-at-psmall.com/noweatrad.html
