NOAA Emergency Alert Weather Radio

We bought one of the Oregon Scientific radios last year...both for use at home and while out horse camping.

The way they work...you enter your state and county-specific code in the radio, and if there is an alert (including weather, food safety, or other hazard), your radio will broadcast the voice alert warning.

Our Governor's office said in a recent Post-Dispatch article that the single most important thing us Rural folks can do for our safety in Tornado season is to purchase an NOAA radio.

Here in Lincoln county, they do a test every Wednesday between 10 AM and 1 PM so you can make sure you are getting the alerts.

In standby mode, the radio does not broadcast UNTIL an alert is issued for your particluar county. We have the volume set loud so it will wake us up in the event of a tornado watch or warning late at night.

I know they could save lives out in the country if you own one. I think they are worth it.

I'll absolutely agree. The other thing that will trigger an alert (or at least on mine) is a Sara Alert.

I heard they were talking about making them a building code requirement in all mobile homes but I don't know if it ever got approved.

I have an Oregon Scientific too and really like it.

My one and only complaint is that I wish you could set it for what type of warnings it will alert to. Flooding is not an issue on the hilltop we live on so I get a little tired of being blasted out of bed at 1am for a flash flood warning.

Ike, I agree...we got a warning today about flash flooding and we are many miles away from the potential threat. Some counties "subdivide" and this allows for a more discreet advisory, but not our county.
