Arkansas Devil?

Fact or fiction?

I have had many mountain folk tell me there is a strange animal that is killing livestock. Any livestock.

Even the Forest Rangers talk about it and have seen packs of them.

I had one person tell me that she called the Law and Game Warden to her house for one. She had 8 foot fencing around her property and that they were standing in her yard when it came after them. Jumped the fence, both Officer and Game Warden shot it. It turned and cleared the fence again and was gone.

It is described as looking like a hyena wolf cross, hind end like a hyena and ears, but the rest like a wolf, very large, and runs side ways.

They go on to say that it attacks at the rear and once the animal is down, starts eating at the anus. Only eating the soft parts, like the organs, tongue, etc., etc.

The only thing I found so far on the net was this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal/Cattle_Mutilation

People around here are very passionate about this and can tell some tales of encounters.

Not just a few, but everyone I ask, say its all true and some have seen them.

Ok, Arkansas people, what do you have to say and/or think?

I found the proof.
This is from our counties news paper from January of 2006.
Where the location of the sighting off 352 is about 7 miles from where I live.

I want off this mountain and in another county.

You can hear strange animal noises up here that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
The horses go crazy and I am up and down at night shining the flood light checking on them.

That's just downright terrifying! Parts of that article was almost like reading a horror story, I was just waiting for that thing to jump out and kill someone
I don't think I'd be venturing out too far without a gun.

Well that's just creepy. You should just move to Missouri. We may be the meth lab capital but we dont have scary carniverous monsters.

I dont go out at night. I stand by the door and listen or the windows.
I have those big ole windows that they can jump right through if they wanted to.

There is a 45 in my truck, ready to go. I would empty that sucker right into one.
I hope and pray I will never see one.

Only a small handful of Game wardens will say anything about they are real.
Makes you wonder what the heck is up here.

I worry more about my horses and when my dogs go out, I keep a close eye on them, from the front door or window.

Well, that 45 won't do you any good in the truck if you're in the house...

Urban - in this case rural - legend...

Wow, definitely creepy, but being inquisitive as I am I would have a camera (and the gun) handy.

I just have to wonder though, why no one has ever killed one? If these ranchers know they are there they why did they not have a gun or atleast a camera with them at all times? What about setting up a wildlife camera (a special video camera that is motion activated and can take pictures at night) like the ones guys use around here to video the deer when they come up to the feeders? They could use that and bait the area and catch images of them so that they could be studied....I think I would have to check into that for myself to see if the stories are really true....if so.... I think I'd move!

We have bears, and panthers or lions whatever you want to call them out here... also rattlesnakes and such.... Maybe it's a panther they are thinking of... They scream and make other sounds that sound kinda like a baby crying... but when they scream it makes every hair on your body stand up! We had one staying in the woods behind the house last years... kinda creepy but havn't heard her this year... yet. She never bothered the horses though and was kinda cool to watch her (from a distance)

We also have Bobcats in Missouri. They sound like what Cascy described, a woman screaming or a baby crying. They are also taller in front than in the back end. I watched one across the street from our house in Cuba. Beautiful cat, I swear it knew I was looking at it through the window. It turned it's head and appeared to be looking straight at me. Creepy!

We have panthers and coyotes back home, know what they sound like.

They have given eye witness accounts as well as a few Game Wardens seeing them and a Forest Rangers telling Doug he saw a pack of them.

Face, the 45 is for when I am in my truck and I have a gun cabinet full of rifles that will do the trick.

I carry my camera with me, but to tell you the truth, dont want to have to use it.

Also, how many people do carry a camera who is out doing something with their animals, like the one woman on the beavers, or herding/checking on cows?
Very few.

We I am is very rural and woodsy and the THING hangs out more up in the mountains and woods.

Yes, I need to move.
