We went to the sale at Poplar Bluff last weekend
I just thought I would give you guys a discription of the new consignment sale at Poplar Bluff at the R Bar H arena they had last weekend.
We loved the arena. It was really big and had plenty of room to really see the horses work. If they were good working horses you could tell they really did work...If it was a quick sale barn ride put on one you could see that too. They had calves to rope or cut and they set the barrels and poles up to run. Very friendly and well run sale. The food stand was a bit unorganized, but manageable and the food was pretty good (when you are there all day this is good to know). I was a bit disappointed in the horses that were there. They had about 50 head. I mean for the most part they were nice using horses that were well represented (from what you can tell in one day). They had a good mix of roping, barrel, general using horses, and one pretty nice WP mare, one halter stallion. What I was dissappionted about is that we do cow horses and WP horses. I know there is not a big call for WP horses these days, so I really didn't expect to see many (if any) of them, but we were told that there would be some well bred cow horses coming. There were a couple....the best one being a just started (about 12 rides) bay 2 year old, good pedigree but nothing super special. Very balanced, but still thin and gangly. If I needed one I would have brought him home (but we already have 8 to start this year). He brought between $700 - $800. The guy that put on the sale had a couple that were penning/sorting type horses. I think they sold for around $1,200 - $1,400. The WP mare was a real cute registered solid APHA. She had a few APHA points and rode around pretty nice and very quiet. I'm don't remember exactly what she sold for...I want to say either $1,200 or $1,700. I do remember what ever it was, it was way too cheap for her...From the way she rode at the sale, she should have sold for twice that easily. The well bred cow horses we actually went to see weren't there. Prices were still low - better than the regular local sales, but most the horses were a little better quality than the local sales also. Not alot of buyers, lots of lookers. It was very cold so the weather could have had some to do with that. They are supposed to have another sale sometime in March. It was interesting enough that we will go back and hopefully the weather had something to do with this one and the March sale will have some higher prices. If I have anything ready to sell at that time I probly would try it down there...maybe it would do well, but I will be prepared to bring it back home. Overall a good place and run well. If the market and economy was better I think it has the potential to be one of the better sales.
