Adventures in Horsehunting

alternate title: Roadtripping with the three Goofateers

This saga started Thursday morning at 3:15. Fell out of bed, went to work. Had two hours of comp time to use because I'm a good conscientious employee and worked certain hours at the Christmas season (yeah, right, show me the $). Got off work at noon, yippee. Called trainer/buddy "If it wasn't so cold I'd run down to "Nowheresville, south" and see "horse for sale". He said "it's not that cold, let's go". Bear in mind that trainer/buddy was raised in Montana, but he says it feels colder here. Drove from work to home, threw on warm stuff and proceeded to "Nowheresville, north" to pick up trainer/buddy and his sweet wife. Had to do some moving stuff with them, they're moving, not me. Finally left "Nowheresville, north" about 4PM. Driving south forever. Missed "Nowheresville, south and had to backtrack many miles. Called owner of "horse for sale" and explained silly mistake. Owner met us and led us to where we were supposed to be. Owner had nice breeding stable for quality QH's (lines include names that even I recognize - Leo, Doc, Peppy). TWO ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS STUDS. One cremello with those pale blue/green eyes, the other a grulla. Trainer/buddy noticed that the grulla was limping, and being the kind-hearted soul that he is just had to check the ol' boy out. The owner's hubby has a serious health issue, so she hired a man to take care of the horses while she took care of hubby. Being a gentle and trusting soul she hadn't personally checked on her investment in a while. The stalls were (I'm not exaggerating here) one foot deep in ! to be continued

These lovely creatures had no water, or hay and hadn't been grained. "Sweet wife" jumped in and started breaking the muck in the grulla's stall loose. Owner jumped in and started tossing it out. Owner's daughter and I started throwing grain and hay around to all. Several wheelbarrows later the stall was much cleaner and trainer/buddy started on the "mama's boy". Magnificent stallion has overgrown soles and and abcess in the front left hoof. Trainer/buddy and sweet wife opened the abcess, washed it out with peroxide and wrapped it with a piece of tarp and vet wrap. While he was being so operated on, gorgeous boy stood with his head in his mama's chest. Never moved. Owner was fit to be tied, I do believe the hired hand has lost a cushy job. Studly is feeling better and is putting weight on that hoof. I did not buy "horse for sale", but trainer/buddy fell in love with a cute weanling paint colt that will be going home with him after he leaves his mama. A few more hours later, I dropped trainer/buddy and sweet wife off at "Nowheresville, north" and headed myself on home. I arrived home at 2:30 this am. Dropped clothes and fell in bed with my thermals on. I may have dozed, I'm not sure, but I was back up at 3:15 am and left for work at 4:45. Been a reeaally long day. Wish I could have taken pictures of lovelies #1 and #2, but too dark and too dirty. Good night sweet friends!

Sorry Sacred, I didn't get pics. It was too dark for my camera and the hunkas were filthy. I have never been in the presence of a stallion before. I've seen plenty of pics, but pics don't do them credit. I always figured they were a beefed up version of a gelding. Kind of like the diff between a normal guy and one that hangs out at the gym. It's more like a John Q Public versus Arnold back when he was Mr. Universe.

To continue in the trying to be vague vein, but give a better idea of how far we drove. I work in Troy, live in Warrenton. Trainer/buddy and sweet wife are north of Centralia. "Horse for sale" is a few miles north of Rolla, and we ended up in Licking. Yeah, I put a couple of miles on my car

Trainer/buddy has a very tender heart, being the old cowhand that he is , and can't stand to see any animal in pain. He just couldn't leave until the deed was done and "mama's boy" was feeling better.

Oh, hey, I'm back. I decided to take down the Christmas tree (it usually comes down on New Year's Day, I'm a little slow this year).

Both the boys are a little N of Rolla, MO. If you are actually interested in the grulla I can get the phone # for you. I'm sure the owner would like a little extra income right now with the medical issues her hubby has. Trainer/buddy and I were kind of discussing that prospect with my grey TB mare. The cremello is quite an eyeful too.

But, "I 'splained Ricky" - too dark, boys were dirty. Waaay late. I'm sorry, please put down the shotgun. When trainer/buddy goes back to get his colt, I'll have him get pics of gorgeous.

Yo, what do you think I'd get crossing a black based grey TB with a grulla QH?

Horse shopping? Did I read Grullo?

I would love to get some information on the grullo stallion. Could you priviate message me and let me know how I could get in contact with the owner.

I lost my sweet natured grullo stallion this past summer. I just started looking for another one a few weeks ago.

Oh, boy! I gave you guys the wrong idea. The studs are not for sale, but their "donations" are. Gfhorses, if you still want that # for the service, I'd be glad to get it for you. I REALLY don't think that the owner would let either one of them go, they are seriously mama's boys.

Well that would be my luck..lol.....I'm finding that they are either priced to high or not the quality that I am looking for. My just have to breed for one again. Which can take years.....

GF How about a grulla appaloosa? We are boarding one for one of our friends. He sold his farm and hasn't found or built another one yet. He has mentioned selling this horse as it is the only one he kept after his business took off and he got too busy to keep up with both the horses and the business.

H&S....could you give us a brief discription of exactly what you are looking for. I may have seen a mare yesterday that would work for you. I know the girl that has her and I knew she had a nice gelding for $1,500 but I didn't know that she has this mare. I know she is cheaper than the gelding.
