Cost for pasture board with shelter?

Now that my dh and I have disked and seeded our old worn out hay field with good horse grass seed and it has really grown, we have enough area to pasture board a couple of horses. But we're unsure what to charge and how to handle the hay expense, etc.

We have the pasture and then a lot with some grass that we can shut the gate to separate; the lot has a nice sized open shed for shelter, water trough, hay ring for large hay bales, feeder for square hay bales, hitching post, tie rings, and plenty of room to set up a round pen. I don't have any place to isolate horses (our barn is across the road and full of other animals and "stuff"). I've never boarded my horses because we've always had a farm so I'm unsure how all that works. My husband usually waters my horses and feeds hay and is willing to continue doing that if needed.

Any suggestions or ideas on how much to charge or how it works???

Insurance, insurance, insurance!

Contract, contract, contract!

Cover your backside, cover your backside, cover your backside!

My Mom is boarding my cousin's 2 horses (pasture with run-in shed) - only $150, total. Dirt cheap. But then, like it said it's for her niece, who is in really tough times right now... so take that into consideration. And no - no contract, she doesn't have it covered by insurance; big mistake in my book! But her choice to make I guess. So far everything's gone fine, she's only had them 2 months though.

I agree that I will need a contract. I just didn't know what details to establish prior to developing the contract, such as price, what it includes, etc.

What is a fair price for pasture board with a shelter?

Do the people who board usually provide an adequate amount of hay for their horse or do they pay the people with the land to provide the hay and feed it?

I live fairly close to Minneapolis - I haven't seen pasture board over $200/month. There were two places in the paper today for $195 and $200 and it's usually cheaper as you go further from the cities. My stable charges $200 - they provide and feed hay twice a day (no grain). I also have access to an indoor and outdoor arena, tack storage, and wash stall.

Can you call around to facilities in your area to see what they're charging?

Good point Apple. The places I've checked out were Isanti County distance form the cities and charging $175 WITH an indoor arena BUT with a very small paddock and usually shared with one or two other horses. They did have a farrier out quite often on a regular basis and a vet at the ready not too far away. So that's a lot of services for the price.

We pay $160 month, feed (no grain) and hay 2x/day. Horses have full access to barn which is also the indoor arena unless it is being used, a training pasture (jumps and cavellettis etc), tack storage and ferrier is scheduled every 6 weeks. We have 2 trainers that provide lessons and the BO is always looking to try something new that will make for better horse management and health - She's very innovative. We each do go out and help out so that she doesn't need to hire someone, but she and one trainer still end up with a majority of the work. We do quarterly tape measures and have graphs posted for each horse so we can keep an eye on both chubby and skinny horses alike. The skinny ones get brought in for a special meal in addition to the regularly scheduled ones. If she notes anything abnormal at any time of the day she will call in a flash - any of us will. We have barn meetings and a yearly thoroughbred birthday party (the barn has several boarded lol),

Events like one of my horses getting a gait evaluation followed by a massage brought 1/2 the barn members out to video, watch, ask questions and have her show some people what she meant when she said something was off....it's a pretty fun place.

We all knew each other at our last barn and then the BO bought this place and invited us in. One person did come after we all moved in though. It's like a family but we all do our own things too.

We live in a Mpls suburb and I thnk our board is low for this area. It's definitely low for what the Barn Owner gets out of it.
