Hay prices this year..

Well I know earlier this spring/summer the price of hay was still pretty high. But we've seen the price drop or at least in our area. We should have hay to sell this year and I was wondering what the prices in other areas are still doing.

I thought 3-3.50 for a small square(40-50 lbs) bail was about right. My boss however, thinks that they should be down to $2.00..

What do you guys think..

The guy the next farm over was bailing for NINE a bale. Convenience aside we drove a little and got 500 bales at $4

I paid $3.90 a bale for 75lb squares of timothy brome mix. Baled about as tight as is possible on a big JD baler. Put up perfect and just a shade off of neon alfalfa.

Smaller bales of grass or grass/brome mix were going for $3-3.50 at the same hay auction which is a pretty good indicator of the actual value of hay in our area.

In our local paper squares are anywhere from $3-4.50 but who knows how heavy they actually are or what the quality is like without driving around to look at them.

Farmers around here are saying that they need to get at least $3 a bale to pay for the hay/baling/time/fuel.

Does your boss buy hay? He sounds like a shifty character to me just from that bit of evidence, if you'll excuse the comment I'd guess $4 would be right in the pocket

yes my boss buys hay..

he tried telling me that if the hay prices didn't drop down too 2.00 a bale that more horses were going to be sold. Ok last year hay got a little tight in our area due to no rain. However, knowbody had to pay 7.00 or more for hay at least knowbody I knew.. They were at 3-4.

Interesting....what a difference in prices. We haven't even cut yet! Haven't had enough days without rain. Hoping to get it done this next week. We usually sell some too, so its interesting to hear what its going for. I don't think I would sell it for less than $3.00 a bale, with the price of fuel and all. We don't usually sell many, just enough to pay for our gas. I will be doing a please don't rain dance this week!

LOL I can't give it away we had/have 500# round bales mixed grass for 25$ can't make it for less than that only had dealers call or others who were price shopping to price theres. Gas twine seed/fertilizer are all higher so you'd think people would realize the cost per bale has to go up. have not tried to sell small squares yet only baled 400 are barn is full from last year of small ones have allot of round bales this year. Have not started 2nd crop in about 2 weeks. Good Luck

Marsha, we can't bale ours for less than $3 a bale and come out on it at all with the price of gas. The way I figure it, either people can buy it now off the field at $3 a bale or they can buy it out of the shed this winter when they run out at $3.50 a bale. Doesn't make a difference to me!

Tell your boss he's nuts.

My mom paid $1.75 for small squares from my bf's boss. He figures how much it costs him to run the equipment and a little for his time, then divys that cost up between how many bales he got for that particular cutting.

I think my dad is up to $2.50 or $2.75 now.
