sad and blue

I'm just plain sad. There have been a rash of problems lately and I just don't seem to get enough done.
The biggest and saddest thing is that my youngest daughter's dog is dying. I took her to the vet yesterday and they kept her overnight but sent her home to die today. She is 13 years old and her kidneys are failing. She has probably days maybe a week before she is gone. While the sparkle has gone from her pretty little eyes, her gums and nails are bluish purple, and she has a vascular ulcer on one of her feet which have become cold, she is not in any pain. She follows me still from room to room. She does stagger a bit when she first gets up. She will most likely die during one of these long naps she likes to take at my feet or at night in her doggie bed. We've known since last fall she has kidney failure and yes, she is an old dog who is/was always very loved and had a happy life and I've done the best I could for her, but it still hurts so bad.

I have not told my youngest daughter about this yet, she is coming home from being in Africa tomorrow. I would like to tell her after she sees Lassie but then there is the chance Lassie will be dead before we get back from the airport, so maybe it would be better to tell her soon after we see her. I'll ask my older daughter for advice since she lost all of her dogs when she was in college and is very close to her sister. So far I've known I would cry if I tried to talk to her about it but maybe I've shed enough tears to you guys now I'll be able to ask. Sorry for the vent but it really does help to write this and cry all over the keyboard.

Thanks for the sympathy Cowgirl. I'm over dealing with it and am just glad I can care for her and she is not in pain. You are so right about it being hard to lose dogs. I really feel like these guys helped me raise my children.

Version, the male dog is Kody and he seems pretty oblivious to there being a problem he just notices more tastier treats around. I guess he is lucky too.

Oh, I'm so sorry for what you are going through.
Your daughter will understand, she will accept it, All things happen for a reason. Just hang in there, and everything will turn out okay.

I feel so lucky cuz when I went to visit Kody and Lassie weren't too sure of me at all, but after a while they realized that I had treats and knew good scratchie places too. They are really sweet dogs

Yes, my daughter made it home(Africa is awesome I am told). Lassie is still with us and I thought she was feeling better. We went back to the vet today and she thought so too. Unfortunately Lassie had a bout of nausea and vomiting this afternoon which was upsetting to my daughter. Lassie seems over it now and I'm hoping it doesn't come back to this extent. Why can't we all just die comfortably in our sleep?!?

I'm sorry for Lassie and your daughter, pennyrain. I don't know why we can't all die softly and quietly without pain in our sleep Lassie is probably the least upset by all of this

Hi PennyRain
How is it going?
I have had my spitz 'Snickers' for just about 13 years- ever since she was 4 weeks old- so we are really bonded. She has been my buddy through some worst of times. We had alot of bad/sad situations last year- ontop of it all, I noticed Snickers was not feeling well, took her to the vet (around June-July) and they diagnosed her with starting Kidney failure. They said 6 - 12 months at the most. They recommended a different diet for her in the mean time.

I have been doing that and she is ok - she does vomit and have what looks like beginning of mini seizure that only last a few seconds. It is upsetting to see it but she does not seem to be in pain, and can still function. She's about blind and somewhat deaf as well but still runs and plays and so happy when I come home. I keep wondering if I should put her down due to the vomitting and seizures but vet said she is ok. So, I know it is a matter of time. I hope she will go quietly in her sleep so I don't have to make the decision to put her down.

Thank you everybody for all of the support. It really does mean so much to me.

Lassie is still here and seems comfortable. She did have quite a bit of vomiting last night but seems better if I feed her roasted chicken, so I will stay with that.

Pippy, I'm sorry you are going through this as well. Lassie was diagnosed with kidney failure in November. Her weight had dropped from 23 pounds in May to 19 pounds and she looked sad. The vet had me start her on kidney diet and she did improve for awhile. Her weight went up to 20 pounds, her eyes sparkled, and she would play. She did well until about 2 weeks ago when she stopped eating as much, laid around, would stagger when she got up, eventually vomited and her eyes looked dull and sad. When I took her to the vet last Tues. they drew blood to see how bad it was. I received a message from the vet on Fri. with the vet saying she expected Lassie had died by then but that her lab results were back and her BUN and creatinine were the highest she'd seen. I took Lassie with me on Monday when I went back to the vet to get more needles and ringer solution and they were surprised to see how much better she was but they only gave me 10 needles and 2 bags of ringer so I don't think they expect her to last much longer. She is such a good girl about getting the subcutaneous fluid but I'm sure her neck must be getting sore with getting it twice a day. She has added alot of joy to my life and I know I will miss her dreadfully. I'm praying that she is able to go easily.

Poor Lassie, I don't think any of us would appreciate getting two shots a day. I had to smile reading about her getting a chicken dinner though What doggie wouldn't appreciate that?! Penny, you're doing the best of anyone taking care of Lassie and I'm glad you know she appreciates it. How's your daughter and Kody taking this?
