Milk Anyone?

I'm trying to find a dairy cow for a family milker. I started looking about a month ago and I guess they just aren't easy to come by like horses. LOL

I'm looking for a Jersey or Jersey cross. Hand milked would be a plus, but I will consider any if they're gentle. I would really like one who is milking now or due to freshen with in a few weeks. A cow/calf combo is fine too.

I live on the west side of the state. Just want to stick with Michigan because there are so many regulations on the dairy industry and moving cows between state lines.

I don't really want to pick one up at auction because I'm so inexperienced I wouldn't know if I was getting a good one or not.

Can you Michiganders..or is it Michiganians?...help me out?

I would suggest putting an ad on craigslist. I've had great success with that website!

I tried it one time, but I think I'll try again.

Hard Rocks Farm in Bloomingdale may have one I'll try to find thier number for you when I get home from work or you can look up Pete Percival...ask for Karen. I'd also suggest if you want something for home production you look into a goat. I don't know how much milk comes from a cow but I do know it's several gallons. Most goats will produce from a pint to just over a gallon twice a day.

Of course if you do get a cow and you have extra milk you can feed it to pigs or chickens....makes for great eggs/meat!!

Hey Karen,

Did you have a chance to find that phone number for Hard Rocks Farm? I put ads on Craigslist, but not one response.

Thanks!

Sorry no I can't find the number but my husband may have it. Iam sure Petes number would be in the phone book though under a Bloomindale listing...just ask for Karen though she deals with the animals. I was able to email her tonite though it was through the goat list so I don't have her full email or I'd send that to you. If you go to yahoo groups and join the MIgoat list you can do a memeber search to find her as well.

I'll keep you posted
Karen
