We start baling soon!!!!

So we put in a hay field this spring and while the alfalfa is not really high enough to bale the oats are and we are getting ready to cut. Iam so excited with this hay I'll not be feeding grain to the goats that's for sure and probally the old mares will get a flake or two and no grain as well. If it rains after we bale and the weather is excelent we might ...JUST MIGHT ....get a late second cut as well.

That's great news! I wish we had our own hay field but even if we did, we don't have the equipment to cut and bale it. Our horse pasture used to be a hay field. It's 50/50 grass and alfalfa with some clover, so really, really rich. No wonder we have so many fatties! I had to take them off it at night b/c they were getting too fat. Now they're only on it 10 hours a day.
Do you have the equipment to cut and bale or is someone doing it for you?

Thanks guys, we are paying to have it baled but once we get moved to the farm will try to take it over ourselves. Right now we've just got the 11 or so in hay by 2010 we'll have about 30 of our own with the option to lease more land. We shall see. We are also going to be looking into irigating at least part of the hay field to be sure we can have a good crop.

For this year the thought was we'd get to cut this week now with rain still in the forcast I dont' think he'll be cutting tomorrow.
