We found a trainer about 15 minutes away who comes highly recommended! I called and talked to the wife (husband/wife both train) and she gave all the right answers. She talked about their philosophy, goals, expectations, etc. It all gelled with what we wanted in a trainer. She said they like to meet the owners before they ever meet the horse. They take you around their facility, show their training methods with horses that they are working with now and encourage you to stop by any time once your horse is there. They require 30 days starting out with the last week spent working with the horse and the owner. They then decide after the 30 days (with the owner) if the horse is doing great and can go home or if they need more time. They then take it week by week rather than making you keep the horse there for another full 30 days.
I explained since we were beginners training the horse was just part of it. She agreed and said they would work with us, show us their methods, send us home with notes, diagrams, etc. and help us with any questions when we return home.
A couple of friends have sent several horses to then--all with diff. problems--and the horses come back calm, happy and well trained.
Can you tell I'm excited!!! We are going to meet them tom. and as luck would have it they have an opening on the 24th of May because someone at the naval base is being transferred and had to cancel. She said they were normally booked months in advance (my friends had already warned me about this). We are excited about the next several years that we can spend with this horse--we love him and def. want him as part of the family! Thanks for the suggestions and listening.
