Thumbs up Equine Disaster Preparedness Seminar

IMPORTANT NOTICE.
BE PREPARED!!
Many equine enthusiasts remember all too well the 2005 hurricane season. Frantic phone calls between friends, the agonizing decision of whether to evacuate or await further tracking information and finally the search for stabling as the potential for disaster approaches. This scenario looms in the minds of all who face the inevitable return of hurricane season each and every year but also applies to those threatened by even faster moving threats such as wildfire.
The best advice.BE PREPARED!!
This year agencies across Florida, both public and private, will hold a statewide exercise in disaster response that we all hope will never materialize. But the decision for this years' disaster scenario protocol was based on the impression that North Florida has become complacent in the belief that it will never happen here. Well, it has in the past and it could again. This year the exercise will be predicated on a fictitious event involving a Category 3 to 4 hurricane that tracks west across the Florida Keys, then follows a path north up the Gulf, then takes an easterly track after entering in the vicinity of the Big Bend of Florida crossing the state to exit around Jacksonville, possibly still as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.
ALL state and local agencies along with the American Red Cross train for just such an event and stand at the ready to respond.

There's another one of these I believe in the planning process for south of Jacksonville. If it comes together I'll post something here about it

i wish i could he gone. i think i might run out and find some luggage tags to put on the horses halters when we know that a big storm is coming so if something happens people can get ahold of me. I hope that nothing does happen though. but the funny thing is i went to the horsey yardsale at the tack shack in ocala that day ended up with a brand new english shoow pad for 5 dollars and a nice pair of breeches with a small stain for 1 dollar. i was very pleased.

If the horse isn't chipped, I would put a secondary form of ID on your horse in case the luggage tag and/or halter comes off. JMO.

During a hurricane you shouldn't leave halters on. If they are break away that works a little better but then the luggage tag needs to be braided into the mane or tail. You can also use the bracelets they give you at events to show that you have paid/are allowed to be there and write with permanent marker on those and put around the hoof. They will break if they get caught on something. They also have and I can't remember the name of it right now, but you can write on the animal and it stays on them. There is also the long colored plastic tape type stuff that you see around trees sometimes that you can also tie into the mane or tail and write on. It can be seen because of the color and is plastic so can hold up to lots of rain. I was told Home Depot and stores like that have them.
Fly masks are not safe. They fill with sand/debris and the horse can't see.
First aid kits should be ready. Signs should be made ahead of time for either "animals are fine" or "need help"
If you choose to evacuate LEAVE EARLY. The last place you want to be is stuck on a highway with a horse trailer
Our riding club did this for a topic for one of our meetings. As I remember more I'll post.

thanks i never thought of that. yea our horses arent microchipped. they are pasture puffs right now but we love them very much the halters for hour horses stay on 24/7 they are hard to catch plus the fact around here you cant trust people. had someone use a baseball bat and crush our mailbox so we havnt been letting the horses out to graze as we are scared that someone might open the gate and let them loose. so we keep the halters on incase someone cuts our fence to let the horses run loose. they have cut the fence before trying to steal our fourwheelers
