Vaccinations

What vaccinations do you give? I need to let the vet know exactly what vaccines I want done, and I normally just tell them to come vaccinate and they do it!

I use the 6 way, WNV, Rabies, and with the soon to be prego mares(keeps fingers crossed) whatever shots they need.

I give all but the rabies shots.

I do the 5 way, WNV, Rabies and Tetnus Booster. I also have them pull coggins prior to given shots.

Dumb question- What is in the 5 way or 6 way? Is that where the flu/rhino shots are? And I notice y'all don't do strangles, but it is required where I board and the show park where I show. Also, I can't do the vaccines myself because I have to have proof from the vet for the show park... Is there a vaccine for the ... UH! The name has escaped me, EHV or something like that, that caused all the problems during show season last year?

the only difference in the 5 way and 6 way is the 6 way has eastern, western and venesualian(sp) encepholmytis (sp) the 5 way has eastern and western. Either one is fine.

Yes there is an EHV Vaccine. You can go to jeffersequine.com and look under vaccines and get all the actual info on these shots and stuff. Eventhough you have to have the vet sign off on yours, you can research them to your knowledge.

I definitely remember giving my horse WNV, Flu/Rhino, Rabies, and Strangles. I'm sure there were more, but I just wanted to stress the strangles vaccine (a very important one, IMO). My horse came down with strangles a few years ago, and while it doesn't prevent the disease, the vaccine DEFINITELY lessens the symptoms and helps the horse recover more quickly. My horse having a lesser case of strangles was stressful enough - I can't imagine how awful it must be for an unvaccinated horse!

Strangles is extremely bad, I had a horse that had it many years ago. I do not vaccinate for it. For me my vet does not recommend it. I have not tried the intranasal though, I have to ask him about that.

Also Carri, remember to ask what EHV your vet is giving. Common is EHV-1 but there is also one that has EHV-4. It covers the Kentucky 93 virus that was so nasty.

I give the 5 way, WNV, and rabies (well vet has to give rabies). I don't give strangles either. I would if I were at a large boarding facilty or showing.
