Preg Check Results!

Just got in from doing preg checks on our cows here at home, 17/20 are pregnant! Here's how it went down...

Milking cows

Kanzy PREG! due late March/early April
Glenda PREG! Due April 13
Bindy PREG! due late March/early April
Marina PREG! due March 10
Jessie PREG! due March 10
White face cow PREG! due March 10
Cora Open - will needle her tonight and tomorrow and get her back on track
Mildred PREG! due March 10
Jolene PREG! due late March/early April
Kendra PREG! due Feb 20
Suekie PREG! due April 6

Heifers & others

Shorty (heifer) shortbred? - recheck to confirm
Marietta PREG! due March 9
Shadow (heifer) PREG! due March 23
Cruise PREG! due March 23
Mavis PREG! due Feb 4
Birdie (heifer) PREG! due early Nov
Gemma - not preg will be culled
Brownie (beefer) PREG! due Mar 17
Blanche (heifer) PREG! due Feb 4

Just about all of the dates are estimates, but they're fairly accurate. All of the cows are bred to either The Judge (earlier due dates) or Calvin (the later due dates).

This outta make for an interesting Jolene Contest! Just think a Jersey x Aryshire cross I don't even know what expect from that.

We didn't even bother checking the beef, they all have calves at their side so it would have made it quite difficult with our set up.

Anyways, that was how my afternoon went, not too shabby in my opinion!

So I am assuming the one that has to be culled hasn't got preggers for the last couple of years?

Correct, I think it's been 2 years since Gemma has given us a baby. We've put her on a needling program a few times, she's been running with a bull, we tried A.I. but to no avail. Can't say we didn't try.

Thanks for sharing the excitment with me! Next spring will be a busy time that's for sure!

You should have seen the look on my vet's face when he was doing a palpation and I asked if the fetus felt like an Aryshire or a Belted Galloway -----> PRICELESS!

To cull a cow means that she's slaughter bound. Yes it's sad and it breaks my heart to think about it, but we can't keep her if she's not doing anything. For a cow to live here, or on any farm for that fact they have to pay for hemselves, Gemma is not in calf, and had no milk so she has to go.

As my mother used to tell me. "Death is an unfortunate, but nessasry part of life." It's still hard to let them go though. And even harder sense she has a name. So I'm sorry. But just think of all the little ones you ARE going to have. You will truely have your hands full. And you know we are going to need pictures.

Great news for the new babies come spring.
I would never make a great farmer, I would keep all of them whether they produce or not.
