Hen question

How many eggs will a hen set? I have decided to let one of my hens set on a nest of eggs. Today she got off to eat and I counted 30 eggs. 1 was cracked so I removed that one. It has only been less than a week since I decided this.

I did have to stop another hen from getting on that nest while the one that is setting on the eggs ate. I don't want anymore eggs in that nest.

My bantam hen was setting on 14 or 16 eggs. Can't remember for sure. I candled them around 7 to 9 days and marked them on the round end, check mark (^) for fertile and (?) if I wasn't sure and (-) if I thought they were a dud. Then I went back a week later, candled them again and removed all duds. I think she was left with 10 eggs. Of the remaining eggs 8 hatched.

It's important to candle the eggs during development when you have such a large number. Bad eggs can spoil the hole clutch.

Good luck and let us know when they hatch.
