Duck attacked by dogs!!!!!! Updated pictures

One of my male ducks was attacked by 3 dogs. He has a wound on his neck and chest. I am afraid I am going to lose him. I put up all the other animals. I have treated the areas and the duck in now on my sunporch.

I am headed to my neighbors to get their rifle and I am going dog hunting as I saw the attack happen and know what the dogs look like. I am guessing that they got 2 of my roosters in the past that disappeared.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals but I WILL NOT tolerate any of my animals being attacked. Please say a prayer for my duck and one for the dogs I am about to hunt down. If I find them at their home, I will talk with their owners about keeping them up and let them know that they will be shot if I find them on my property again.

I agree with your decision 100% - you have the right to protect your animals on your property.. the shame belongs to the owners of those dogs..

I am sorry Mary.. poor duck..

I'm not sure about where you are but my area you have to contact the owners and let them know what happened and warn them if said animal(s) are seen on your property agian and are threatening your your animals/childern etc they will be shot but you can't go and hunt the animal down and shoot it it has to be on your property and you have to have seen it attack.

Sorry to hear about your duck and best of luck to him.

Hold on there, Ferronsgranny....

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about what happened. But, before you head off with shotgun in hand, call your sheriff /local police/animal control and have them come out ASAP to file a report. The same thing happened to us almost a year ago when two neighborhood dogs attacked and killed 2 of our 4 ducks. Here's what you need to do:

1. Call the authorities and tell them to come out immediately.

2. Take pictures of the damage. If your lifestock/ducks (or roosters) were killed by the neighbor's dogs, most jurisdictions consider this unlawful and will have the dogs quarantined and possibly euthansized.

3. If taking pictures with a digital, contact the owners of the dogs. Take someone with you who can help serve as witness and "reel things in" if the situation escalated (it did with me and I almost wound up getting myself arrested.)

4. Tell the dogs' owners that you want restitution that includes all vet bills for your animal that was injured. Tell them if they don't comply, you'll see them in court and it will wind up costing them a lot more in the long run. Money talks.

The 2 dogs that attacked my ducks were picked up by animal control and their owners were notified. One owner was absolutely crushed and stepped up, called me and told me that she'd be responsible for all vet bills. She said that I need to do whatever it took to fix the ducks. Oddly enough, her dog was innocent of the killings. The owner of the other dog was the scourge of the Earth and refused to contact me, lied to the courts about restitution, and lied about their dog's confinement.

I hope this helps. I know you're angry and what happened is truly awful. BUT, make sure you take the proper steps to protect both yourself and your property. No one likes stupid, disrespectful people living next door to them. Unfortunately, most of us suffer from this syndrome. Don't make a bad situation worse by lowering yourself to their standards.

Good luck. PM me if you'd like additional information.

Best wishes for your duck.

Breburth if you read my story you will see that I will kill them if they are still on my land. If I find them at the owners I will tell them what happened. I did see the attack and ran out barefooted, grabbed a big stick and went after the dogs. I can identify all 3 dogs. None had collars on. If I had a rifle here, they would already be dead and buried.

The laws here in Mississippi says that you can protect your livestock or animals with deadly force. I have contacted the sheriff's department.(Deputy lives down the road). I have also contact the Big Creek police department. (He lives across from the road from the Deputy). The Deputy and city policeman are both coming over to help walk my property to see if the dogs are here. They are both bringing rifles and if we find them they will be shot on site. They are many feral dogs here as people love to dump them in the country.

If we don't find them on my property, they will check the people within 5 miles of me and see if they own the dogs. I gave them both good descriptions of the dogs. There are about 30 houses withing 5 miles of me, so it won't be to hard to see if they are owned by anyone. Population here in this small town is less than 500. It is mostly farm and cattle land.

Ferronsgranny, I am so sorry about your duck. I hope that he will be ok. Prayers for him.

As far as the other: I agree with GBar 100%. It is your livestock and you have the right to use deadly force if necessary. I would. Those laws are there for a reason, Georgia is the same way.

I hope your duck gets better! Poor guy.

I agree with Kemstar, take pictures! And have a witness. Go and talk to the owners, maybe they will try to alleviate some of the problems their dogs caused by helping with a vet bill.

I agree where I live in TN that is exactly how it works. On your property it's the law by me. Dogs should not be running loose anyway. If it attacks on my land Shoot and ask questions later

The law is one thing, doing what is right is another. Do us all a favor and just shoot the owners...

ok as much as we would like her too shoot the owners.. Nobody is going to do that. I think FG did the right thing she did contact law enforcement just happens to be her neighbors..

If the officers are the ones that shoot the dogs knowbody can come back against FG. Also, if people would be more responsible for there dogs this wouldn't have happend in the first place.

FG also said that it could be a bunch of dogs that just got droped off in the country that does happen alot. They then act like a pack of wild dogs and will take down livestock and other animals for food.

T-Mom I live in Calhoun County. We did not find the dogs on my property but as I was giving the descriptions, they both knew who they belonged to. So off we went down to that person's house and there were the dogs. The person that owns the dogs know that they will kill baby calves and poultry. She is under a court order to keep her dogs put up unless she has them on a leash.

The dogs were taken to be put to sleep. The person was so upset but the city policeman reminded her that they have the court order and this is the 5th time that the dogs have attacked and killed. Last year the dogs killed 4 of his hens and the neighbor behind me had a calf killed by the dogs. The year before was 2 incidents of chickens being killed and one puppy by the same dogs.

My duck is still alive. I have started him on antibiotics and am putting Underwoods on his wounds.

Just so that everyone understands, the attack was in my back yard not the pasture. They were within 10 feet of my sunporch. My ducks are now afraid of my dogs. I have 3 dogs that will not hurt any of my other animals. That was a lesson taught as soon as I got here. I have 1 cat, 1 kitten, 3 rescued dogs, 1 rabbitt, 3 ducks, 9 hens, 7 roosters, 4 baby chicks and 6 horses.

The only thing that gets killed around here are mice, rats and the ocasional snake by my dogs and cat.

FG, what a story! I hope your duck is improving.

As for your neighbor....

This is the 5th offense for the dogs? Is the woman crazy? She shouldn't be upset with the officer who came to take her dog -- she should be upset with herself instead. I mean, how much does a length of rope from the hardware store cost? She should have gotten up of her sorry and tended to her dog.

I'm so sorry that this happened, FG, and I'm sorry your neighbors are idiots. I bet their parents were idiots, too.....

Hope your duck gets better FG...it's a shame about the dogs, but a greater shame that their owner was not cited for animal cruelty as well. I can't understand people that let their dogs run loose to kill other's animals.

Ferronsgranny, I hope your duck heals well and quickly - and wish you good aim when shooting. I do agree with Kemstar, and it sounds like you've already started up the process. So, good hunting to you. Better you take care of those dogs quickly and mercifully, than they get run over by a car and die a slow, suffering death.
