Some random cattle pictures

Well we went up home to Dixonville, Alberta to drop the horses off permently as the first step in moving up to our farm.
While I was up there I took some pictures of some of the cattle that PCC's father has.
Most of these cow/calf pairs have never seen a horse in there life so it was so funny to see there reaction when the horses where put out into the field next to theirs.

They actually stood next to the fence and watched the horses all night long because the grass was beat into dust by the next morning.

So here are some pictures of our neighbours...

Great pictures! So, why do some have one ear tag, while others have two?

I know, I know...I ask lots of cow questions, but I know nothing about them.

If you look closely at the blonde cow number 14, she still does have another tag in her other ear but they are a new kind of tag, so she is a younger cow. They are a CCIA tag which are very similar to that of a microchip and are read by a scanner. So instead of a ear tag with a number (7) *Like the blonde cow above her* all that information plus the cows date of birth is in that tag.

We used to run some cattle on a community pasture. Everyone's cattle were all mixed together so all your cattle would get a certain number on a green tag in their left ear so the pasture managers could quickly identify cattle by owner. Plus when it came to sorting at the end of the year it only took one person on the left side to read out tags as they ran down the chute. Your neighbor would have another number. All our cattle had the number 7. If they lost their tag then it would be identified by brands.

We started to pasture our cattle solely at home a couple years ago so we don't put the tags in anymore. But some of the older cows will still have the 7's in their left ears.
