THE smallest goat!

Our doe kidded yesterday. EARLY. I was too late for the first doeling, she was already gone, I found the buckling crying, semi dried off, sack eaten, found mom *first freshener* had passed afterbirth, wanted nothing to do with her babies, and NO milk. Her udder was only about 1/4 full, I couldnt express ANY colostrum.

Needless to say, brought the LITTLE buckling home with me. Nutri drench and has good suck reflex, able to somewhat get up on his own. Got probably about 3/4 of an ounce of milk replacer in him. He MIGHT be a pound soaking wet.

So what went wrong, she was early according to our dates (pen bred...) we werent expecting kids for another few weeks....the babies were both very very small, but seemed totally formed....

He had a good night last night and continues to eat pretty well, and is up on his own, very wobbly but gets around okay.

Here is the little tyke next to our 10 lb Chiuauha mix today

This is last night when I got him home

He MIGHT be a pound, but I dont even think that much. Maybe 3/4 of a pound?? He is SO little. His hooves are like the size of my thumbnail!
I am surprised he is doing so well for how little he is....dont want to Jinx him though. I am going to milk out one of our does today and feed him fresh goats milk instead of the powdered replacer. I just didnt even have a chance last night. I threw all the horses their food and rushed home with him!

Aside from being really small, he looks good. I think you should name him Tiny Tim.

Hah- we already have a Tiny Tim here this year. A lady bought two wethers and named one Tiny Tim and the other Marley. (Tiny tim was the smallest out of a set of triplets)

Did you get colostrum in him? A tetanus shot?

I had a first timer give birth 2 months early on me once. Don't know why, just happened. Baby was fully formed, just lacking hair and eyes weren't open. Breathed and had a heartbeat...but it just wasn't developed enough to make it.

Things happen with first timers. Nothing you can do about it, it's the way of Nature.

I hope everything continues to go well with him. He looks alert and ready for action.

www.fiascofarm.com and www.jackmaudlin.com have some great suggestions and tips for bottle feeding and recipes if you don't want to use powdered. Remember it's every 2 hours to start with!

Good luck, he's a doll!

Oh, one other thing, remember that the lungs are the last to develop fully, so you may want to check with the vet and see if there are any antibiotics you should give him.

WOW! He is so tiny! But so cute. Good luck with him. I hope he makes it. I know they can be very hard to keep when their that small. I've raised Pygmy goats.

Wow how cute is that...looks like a stuffed toy.

Just another idea...you might want to use this contact. They have been a bigger help to me (and my goat friends) than most vets are (they specialize in goats and many vets don't).

Prayers for the little guy to grow up healthy and BIG
