Question Will My Duck Come Back???

We have 10 Muscovy Ducks, they are about 8 or 9 weeks old. They are about the size of a football.......... Well, My 4yr. old son was chasing them this morning (which he got in trouble for), but one got seperated, and when he tried to go get it, it ran into the cornfield...... I walked the ducks up and down the edge of the cornfield, shook their pan of food up and down the cornfield, and my son walked out into the cornfield to try and find it. No Duck! Will he come back on his own??? How strong is their instinct to "home", or their sense of smell??? I feel so bad for him as he is all alone, and it is hot outside.............Is there anything else I could do??

Do they have a place they sleep at night? He should come back as the sun is setting to join the others for the night I hope he comes home, good luck.

My ducks are a mix of dispositions..mallards.
One ducky is a homebody-always,even though she can fly as well as her sister.
Sister takes off for a couple days sometimes..but she always comes back.
I think the duck will come back.
My ducks refuse to sleep in a house-they bunk outside next to a tree at the edge of the pond.

i had plenty of ducks and chickens that we let free range and they always came back (unless something got them) but for the most part and in my opinion it should come back they always come back to eat they connect food and safety with that area. hope the ducky returns!

We had free range ducks and they would wander all over and always came home!

Our duck has taken to wandering the neighbourhood (goes up to 1km away) and always comes back when he gets hungry or lonely. He isn't a flying duck though, so not sure if that makes him more of a homebody.

I hope your little duck is just on an adventure and makes it back safely with an adventure to tell the others!

What you did is everything that I would have done, including the scolding. Not sure if there is much of anything else other than wait and hope he returns. Had it been any other breed you would have heard his stressful quacks but it wouldn't have guaranteed you would have found him. I'm sure your son is sorry. He was just being a boy. My son is 12 and he still loves to chase the birds even more so when he has a partner in crime, a friend.

I hope the remaining 9 will help you with your tick problem. Let us curious minds know the results on that. I've noticed a decline in the mosquito and gnat population. Flies too but then it could be the combined efforts of all my birds, the ducks and the chickens.
