What a waste...

3 hours worth of work
156 cows milked

And not a thing to show for it cause it all got dumped! That's right, about 2000L of milk (give or take) went straight to the manure pit cause we were over quota this month.

It just seems like such a waste of good milk and a waste of my time to even be there.

*sigh*

So people, I urge you to drink more milk, eat more ice cream, use more cheese - you get the point. Maybe, just maybe it'll save us from having to dump it all again. I can dream right?

Awwwwww man!

You should have sent it to the gyms here in California, people drink milk like its going out of STYLE before they work out.

They also take elevators to the gym. :-P

That makes me just sick when I think of all the chocolate milk I could have had.

Cats across america will be protesting. Well at least I know mine will.

What does "being over quota mean"? That has to feel pretty bad having to waste all that milk when so many children could benefit from it.

Oh my goodness! With milk being over $5 a gallon, I can't believe all of that had to go to waste! Of course, the fuel to ship it is lot of the cost, but still!

I LOVE milk. I used to go through a gallon a day. I still would if milk wasn't so expensive! It's a shame you guys had to dump it.

This is what they do it also helps keep the prices high. All sorts of food is thrown away and it should be on the news! There are so many that could benefit from it especially children during the summer who do not have school to get that breakfast and lunch in their bellies so they go hungry mostly.

Can you explain the quota thing?

If that many cows produce too much milk, why have that many cows? Shouldn't the farmer cut back on cows to produce closer to the "quota" and not waste any?

Please explain.

A quota is a set amount you have to produce each month (often for a contract). I assume QCG's farm is contracted to produce only so much milk and the rest must be tossed. They have to milk the cows every day for the cows' health but they can't sell or use the milk.

I don't drink much milk myself (except on cereal) but our family goes through ice cream like you wouldn't believe. We've had to cut back though. Food prices are getting ridiculous and we're a family of five.

Very well said! If we shipped out too much, my boss would have to pay for the extra trucking/handling of the surplus milk.

It just seems like such a waste when there's people starving in the world.

You'd think there'd be someone who wanted it. I assume your manure pit only holds so much volume of material (be it milk, water, or cow poo). If someone offered to pay the trucking and handling, could they have the excess milk? Like an inner-city school or something.

Sorry - just trying to brainstorm a solution.

Sadly not. Here at the farm we do everything we can to make the milk clean, but after it gets picked up they take it to plants that clean it way more and make it more suitable for human consumption.

Well I think that officially sucks, since just yesterday I paid more for a gallon of milk then I did for a gallon of gas...

I shall just have to beef up my (oops, no pun intended ) daily intake of dairy products then.
