Showing Hogs

My cousin has been wondering why the people at the shows he has attended always seem to hold their hands behind their backs when showing hogs.

I could not answer the question for him, I know squat about hogs much less showing them!

When I was in 4H as a kid, they used to show them with a piece of plywood. That's how they would move them around the round pen, also I think it was to protect the kids and other hogs. Gee, sound like fun....no thanks!

See when I was growing up (HAHAHHA I'm only 25) in CA.....my brother showed hogs (I showed sheep) and I had to help.

We would show with a cane and you basically ummm do Parelli on them HAHA....use the cane on the side and tap them the direction they need to go.

When I was in high school, my brother and a few others traveled to the Denver Stock Show and that was the first time they'd see the hands behind the back. Most of those showmen would have a crop or just a 'stick' similar to the parelli stick....and they would essentially just POINT at their hog. Most of those people had worked with the hog enough that they could move it around how they wanted, but they hardly had any contact with it.

Very odd to me...but showing hogs isn't like sheep and cattle where you're literally controlling them and setting them up (like dog shows).

And yes, you can show a pig. 4-H and FFA have a swine 'division' at the county fairs. There are also jackpot shows (or they're also called prospect shows) where you take your 'young' hog and show BEFORE the county fairs. Or their are open shows and breeding shows.

that plywood is usually held by a couple ringmen. They aren't showing the pigs with it. They have the plywood to break up fights because all those hogs aren't used to each other and hogs will fight like no other. The wood is jammed down in between them to break up the fight. Then they'll also use the wood to guide a hog to a catch pen when the judge pulls them out (just like some riders are excused from the ring in a flat class)

The hand behind the back is to give the judge a good veiw of the hog. Kinda like making you more stream lined. The same for the bending down too. My hogs are like dogs. they come when called and all that...
