Funky looking calves

I don't know what the last two cows to calve have been up to, but we have some great color going on here.

First of all I found this out in the field

It's a bit difficult to see, but she has the most funky striped ears, I couldn't believe it when I saw her. Mum is very proud and very protective, so this is the best shot I've got

Yesterday we had a big suprise. We have an old cow who is a real pain in the butt, and she was due to be sold at weaning last year. We had her in a 'no bull' bunch of cows, but she escaped and manged to get in beside our 19 young bulls. By the time we found her in the evening she was ................well she was very tired So she got a stay of execution and yesterday morning she produced a nice big heifer calf.

It was a really good sized calf, so I was shocked when I went back to check, and found that she had another one, even more shocked when I saw her face

So I'll be trying to keep my funky calves............it's just a shame we have no idea which Black Angus Bull carries a 'paint' gene

I love the two grays?? Not sure if they are called gray!? Very sweet, and that blk/wht one is nearly identical to it's moma!! I always stop and watch the new calves in the pastures on the farms in the area!! I miss my Maggie angus! She was a pet!

Brockle faces happen most often in crosses (we see them a lot in the Charolais & Hereford cross) and it is a coloration gene that effects the face/ears/ and some times chest of the calve.
By far they are my favorite looking (other than Murray Greys) cattle.

That one cream heifer looks like she head butted the milk bag a little too hard.

Very adorable! My Angus heifer descends from the "New Design" line of Angus, and both her, her mother, and her Grandmother all have a white splotch on thier bags. Typical of the line I guess. Cow genetics are very cool!

Your babies are soooo beautiful!

I've seen some very nice bulls from the 'New Design' line, Jim doesn't like them so much so didn't get one in the end, he will be glad now if he hears that there are white genes in there at all

We are currently arguing about 'Splash' the boys don't want to keep her because her mother is such a pain, but I figure if she is well behaved at weaning time she may get to stay. Little Zebra ears is a sure keeper, as long as she hits her growth rate.

We got a bonus baby yesterday, we have an ancient cow, few teeth left. skin and bone, bald patches on her hide. Doesn't matter what we feed her she can't hold her weight. At weaning last year she didn't look like she was in calf, so she went in the fattening pen, and we fed her and fed her, still no weight. Now the grass is eventually growing we put her out in the field, the intention was to either get her to market weight, or if she remained healthy just let her mooch around the place and keep the yard trimmed, anyway she has produced a black heifer from somewhere and has also produced a bag like a friesian
