another goat question

I was at a friends the other day to see her babies. The last timeI was there was last yr and her buck was just a baby (don't know the type) and he turned out bigger than she'd expected. She has every intention of breeding him and picked up a pregnant female last summer with me having first dibs on a baby. I really want one of his so I am waiting for the next breeding. Both are extemly friendly and will follow you around since they are attention hogs. My question is, which sexe is better as a pet and how do they fend in the winter??

I would get a female. I don't know about wethers, I think some people prefer them. My 2 girls are fine in the winter, (they're fainters) they grow a winter coat, but have to be brushed in the spring. Other than that, they're pretty easy keepers... At least mine are.

They need company...one simply won't be enough! Seriously, they need a pal.

A three sided shelter is good in the winter with something for them to bed into. They don't like to be wet.

Wethers or does are your best bet.

.

I am a firm believer that everything needs a freind. Less trouble and they seem more content.

I am wanting some pigmys (s of course) and am learning with you - so ask ALL the goat questions you want

Yep you most certainly need AT LEAST two (really two will do) never one alone, they are herd animals too.

Also- maybe just plan on getting what you get, the doe may only have one kid, she could have two, and dont get your heart set on a boy or girl, because you may not get it in that breeding. Wethers (fixed males) make fantastic pets, usually pretty easy going and agreeable (of course there is the exception) does are also great pets, and of course you have the option of breeding her down the road (there is a huge market for pet goats -among other purposes-, believe it or not!)

They do great in the winter, they need a draft free dry place to stay, we have large doghouses and some 3 sided shelters and bed them up with straw in the winter.

We clip our goats in the summer, but that is not needed, they will shed their coats just like horses do. We clip ours because we intend to show them, and we need "fancy" pictures of our goats for to put on our website.

Warning- goats are addictive!

We started with two- we are up to over 30 now I think.....many more on the way too! We breed/raise Nigerian Dwarfs.
