Why did my mini pygmy goat die?????

Yesterday I came home from work and looked out my window to check on my goats and they seemed find they were laying down together, which they do quite often. I went outside about 1/2 hour later and my female was making a horrible loud cry, I went over to her immediatly and noticed how pale her tongue looked and she was salavating and breathing funny. I called the vet he said to give her 1cc of banamine because she was in alot of pain. She collapsed before i even gave her the banamine. I administered the dose and with 10 minutes she died. What happened. I am new to goats but she has been fine. She hasn't acted sick and it went so fast. Within an hour of me noticing her sick. Her male companion is fine and has no symptoms of anything. This is horrible and I am so upset. I've been crying all night and going through my mind what I could have done for her.

rms, I'm so sorry to hear about your goat. It's hard to say what happened, but to be certain, you may want to ask a vet to do a necropsy on her to set your mind at ease.

Are your other goats ok? Did she possibly get into something toxic? Did she have a history of illness? Was there any evidence in her pen that jcould give you additional clues? For the sake and safety of the rest of your herd, you may want to go out and check around.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. But please do try to clear your head and try to find the answer so you can get some rest knowing your other goats are safe.

Hugs and blessings are coming your way.

Sorry for your loss...I would have a necropsy done for sure. It sounds like it could be listeria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listeria . My pygmy goat died from that a few years ago. I also know of several others. It almost looked like rabies or something at first. Before we could even get the vet there he died. Our other goats were fine, but I do know of someone that had several goats die from it, once it started, she lost 12 total from it.

What is bloat? I did notice her stomache looked distended when she was in pain. I actually tried to feel if maybe she was pregnant and didn't know.

It could have been frothy bloat. Was she around alot of weeds or different kind of grasses lately? Usually you get frothy bloat from a change in diet. We are always careful about throwing new weeds or grasses into the pen or letting them out in something new for long periods. Bloat could have put pressure on her heart and lungs making it hard for her to breathe.

How often are you deworming them? Take a stool sample from you other goat in to have it checked for worms. Worms are a serious problem for goats, especially in the south.

It could have been one of several things all of which would have been very difficult if not impossible to save her. Bloat needs imediate attention and the administration of Anti-Toxin...not the same thing as the C & D vaccine. Sometimes givng baking soda or oil helps but more often than not with bloat they do die. The stomachs swell putting pressure on the heart and lungs causing them to sufficate.

Pasturella Pnumonia there is a vaccine for it by the time you see symptoms 99% of them die. I've brought a few back from it however they never really recover and are not thrifty afterwards. The pnumonia attacks the lungs from the outside first basically calcifiying it by the time it reaches the inside the damage is done. Nuflor is a good antibiotic as is Tribrissen for this type of pnumonia however it must be caught quick death results in hours from Pasturella.

Goat Polio- is a lack of Thymin (RX) in the goats system often brought on by rapid change of weather and or food. Massive doses of Thymine can reverse if caught in time. Normally the goat will seem to be blind, off balance and circle, may cry out as if panicing. For Polio I give 6-12cc in the muscle twice a day and for two days after the symptoms clear up.

Listeria-Lysteriosis, Treatment is basically the same as for Polio but Penn. is given along with it. Best way to tell Polio from Listeria is Listeria has a fever with it.

Worms, some types of worms will cause sudden death like the Barber Pole worm. They cause massive internal bleeding the goats seem fine but die from organ failure due to lack of blood. Her paleness may be caused by this or extream pain. Tapeworms, thought to be invasive but not they can and will kill a goat w/o the goat looking as if it's loaded with them.

As was said earlier have her posted if you can but it should be done right away. Take a fecal in from your other goat as well , talk with your vet about treating for Tapeworms even if no eggs are seen. In doing thousands of fecals for a local vet I've only seen one Tapeworm egg.

Sorry about your goat.
